A Chelsea fan to a Newcastle supporter?!

Picking and choosing your football team is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

You're born with it, and you stick with it, end of.

I wasn’t born interested in Football. This is why it’s hard for me… Since leaving college though all I think about and look forward to is Football.

support your local team, then, wherever you're from.

But the lad has no affinity with his local team and is part of a Geordie bloodline. Cut him some slack.  bluewink.gif bluebiggrin.gif

Sounds like you already made up your mind. Newcastle has somehow interested you, while the local teams leave you cold.

Start making the transition, follow the Toon, get some Newcastle gear, but take your time before proclaiming to be a die-hard fan.  You can always fall back on the truth that you finally came to realise that Chelsea are plastic, while the Toon live and breath for NUFC through all their ups and down. Better to follow the Toon for their character than Chelsea for their titles.

i agree with the not born into football thing.

i come from a family where none on either side is into football.  i wasnt interested in football tilli went away to uni and moved in with 2 mad footy fans.

back in autumn 95 newcastle were doing well, and i decided to go and watch my first game of footy ( erm on sky)  i picked a win over aston villa i think it was. ....think it was the 4-3 game.....i

started to grow on me from there, i was 24. thats was the first football game i had really watched.  Think i saw first half of mopreth town play.....back in 1982 but i dont recall finding it interesting.!

anyway back to mase......where on tyneside were your grandparents from?

and have u been to visit ur cousins recently?

i have no real connection to nufc from family or where i'm from ( been in the US my whole life), and i started supporting them because i visited SJP while on a school trip.  Don't let people who you can and cannot support.  The first U.S football team i supported played close to a thousand miles away, i liked them because it was the first team i saw on TV as a kid. so in conclusion...welcome!

Don't forget us international supporters now.

While I do support my local team, (FC Seoul, perrenial overspenders and underachievers in the K-League. Decent frontline but shite for defense. Hmm... sounds familiar.) I am also a NUFC supporter purely by choice.

I'm not afraid to admit that I have no connection whatsoever to Newcastle, heck, I'm only going there for the first time this spring. But I'd like to think that my love and passion for my adopted club is at leats in some manner comparable to those of you who were born with it.

The reason I support Newcastle is the same as the reason I believe in God, or the reason that I don't watch kiddie-porn  , it's just the right thing to do.

At about what age will you get bored with Newcastle and move on to another team then ?

Well considering I've never supported a Football team before, only time will tell ;). Hopefully and most likely, forever.

buy a toon top, get shearer 9 on the back, and wear it, F*** what anyone else thinks, if you've got geordie blood in you, why SHOULDNT you be a toon fan!?

Will do!

Also I studied Computer Aided Design at college. Waste of time! It's so boring.

My family live in South Shields.

I'm inclined to agree.  But if he came in late and was never really a chelsea fan - just liked watching them cos theyre good and close, and he has good reason to support the toon (there're certainly no glory reasons) i think he should be allowed to repent.

the reason I believe in God

A true Newcastle fan would only believe in Shearer.

The fact that glory like Shearer can exist in this world is proof enough of a creator for me. bluecool.gif

Hello all, this is my first post on the Forum so it’s a little bit of an introduction but also I need some advice! And a lot of it. Grab a bevy, and have a read of my situation and help me out!

The topic is about me switching as a Chelsea fan to a Newcastle supporter.

I turn 19 next week and have followed Football solid for nearly 3 years now. Before that I used to watch the odd game, like once a month. My Dad supports Spurs so I went to see a couple games with him. Now I find my life almost revolves around Football. I work at an Orange retail store and everyone there absolutely loves Football. I want to support a team, go to matches, and stay updated 24/7 just as they do. I’m passionate about the game, just not a team.

When the Chelsea takeover happened I started following Football. A couple of my cousins are season ticket holders at Stamford Bridge and I managed to go see a few games. Obviously there was a bit of a “glory hunter” in me for choosing Chelsea, but I genuinely did keep updated and go to a few games, and have watched every game that I possibly could when I’m not working on TV. If not it would be from the BBC sites live broadcast, which is an absolute life saver when your at work!

People at work and my friends have always called me a glory hunter, and whilst I’ve always denied it the reality of it is true. I’m not really that passionate about Chelsea. Yes I watch every game and stay updated but there’s something not there.

My Grandad was a Newcastle fanatic. He died when I was 11 or 12 but I always remember him not leaving the house without his barcode scarf and hat. He would take them everywhere! Shopping, coming around to see family. Everywhere. And I’ve been thinking of a switch for a couple months now, so I’ve been keeping track on a couple clubs. Newcastle, West Ham and Reading. I live about a 20 minute drive from Reading, so that was the first obvious choice. But I went to a game and just didn’t feel anything. The fans seemed boring, and overall it just felt like a boring club. West Ham are making some good signings, and if they beat relegation this year it looks as though next season will be a good one for them. But still, something’s not there. Then I think of Newcastle, and I always get a little tingle whenever the name is said. When I here my colleagues say Newcastle, I react… I’m like “Who?! What was that?! Huh?!” and then become really interested. I definitely think there is a little bit of my Grandad in me, and I feel as though I should carry on the Newcastle legacy in my family! It’s just the only thing is I live in Berkshire, so I’d only be able to go to away games. I doubt I’d travel further than London (which is about a 40 minute train journey for me). Only once or twice a year would I travel to see a game at St James’ Park. It’s something I’ve only done when I was little and I’d love to do it again…

So that’s my story! I’d just like to know what you guys think. Should I just call myself a Newcastle supporter all of a sudden and start going to games and following them? It’s a strange situation and I don’t know how to go about doing it… I know all of my friends and family will think of it as such a strange decision so if you was in my situation, how would you go about telling them or doing it?

Thanks for reading, it’s a bit of an odd post but it’s what’s on my mind.

I agree with what some of the previous posters said, it shouldn't really be a conscious decision to become a supporter, you should feel it, get drawn in like a moth to a flame.

My advice - yeah, feel free to support the club, see how it grabs you.  For some reason, I think NUFC can grab you more than most ... and I'm also a non-Geordie.

When you stay awake an entire January till 4am clicking refresh on 20 different websites (with Sky Sports News on in the background) to see the latest player we have been linked with in the transfer market ... and then wake up at 7am to see if they unveiled someone in the 3 hours you were asleep, then you know you've become a real fan.

Jees I can’t believe these replies… It’s not a windup… I’ve only recently taking a real interest to Football, and want to support a team. I’ve been claiming to be a Chelsea fan, when really all I done was keep up to date with them. I want to make a commitment to a team, and I think I’ve found one which I like. That’s it. And this hasn’t been posted anywhere else..

EDIT: And yes my Grandad was a Geordie. Most of my Mums side is.

Being NUFC fans is not something that we plan.

It just happened.

It's kinda enlightment though

If you already feel a connnection to the team, you're probably already a fan. Watch a few games, if you scream at the TV as if Ramage can hear you, go buy a shirt.

I was in the same situation when I was looking for a team to support. Since I'm in he US, I feel no local connection to any of the teams. The first full match I ever watched was Liverpool v AC Milan. I was "this" close to becoming a fan of Liverpool until I realized how big a deal winning the Champions League was. I didn't want to jump on a bandwagon, so I waited for the next season to decide. Watching teams the next season, I was only certain of a few things: Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal were not options. I figured if I was ever going to be a true fan, I would have to support the worst team I saw. At the time, thanks to Souness and Boumsong, that was Newcastle. A few weeks later, when N'zogbia hit a free kick to break a goalless streak, I didn't even realize that I had jumped out of my chair in delight.

Ever since then, I've been in for the duration.
