sempuki
Shola set for shock return Jan 21 2007 By Neil Farrington, The Sunday Sun Shola Ameobi could make a shock return to action for Newcastle this season. The striker was ruled out for the campaign when he underwent hip surgery in November. But United boss Glenn Roeder has confirmed that the operation - performed by Colorado-based specialist Dr Marc Philippon - went perfectly. And although Roeder is refusing to pencil Ameobi into his plans, other sources insist the former England Under-21 star is hopeful of a comeback before the end of the current campaign. "Shola has been back to Colarado this week seeing Mr Philippon," Roeder confirmed. "Without getting too excited, he said that at this moment in time, he could not be one per cent more pleased with Shola's progress." And Roeder himself is tipping Ameobi to bounce back so strongly from injury that he forces his way into Steve McClaren's senior England squad. "Michael Owen will attract all the attention when he returns, but Shola is a fans' favourite," added Roeder. "He has great technical ability. "I have a great relationahip with him off the pitch and I will get Shola pushing hard for an England place. "It's a long way away, but it's a goal which should be at the back of his mind. First he has to get back fully fit, get his shirt back and hold his place down. "But then he can get the attention of the England manager."

Guest Hodgson09
technical ability and shola in the same story interesting. Would like to see how he plays without this hip injury, and to be fair he was improving under Roeder. Would be nice to have two touch back.

Guest Hodgson09
You were just bitching about jumping on players backs, hipocrite. LOL
Guest BooBoo
Roeder's not fooling anybody with this talk. Simply a damage limitation exercise as we aint getting a new striker.
Keefaz
If true, this is great news. I know he's not exactly Van Basten mkII, but he'd really help us out at the minute.
Dinho lad
If true, this is great news. I know he's not exactly Van Basten mkII, but he'd really help us out at the minute. Yeah, but he better be fully fit lyke!
Keefaz
I'm sure it won't be for at least another couple of months, so we'll have to decide if he's up to the job when the time comes. Bearing in mind that he'll need a decent run of games to get back to match fitness... it'll all come down to how desperate we are.
stozo
It says shock return this season. By this season I'd assume it means April or May, by which time owen will hopefully be back.

Beren
Great news - with Oba, Dyer, Milner, Shola, Solano and Emre our attack will be banging in goals left, right and centre \o/ Now if only we had new full-backs and decent cover at centre-back... Unlucky Luque
all u shola haters, remember shola was an important player for us late last season and the start of this one. I believe him and martins would be very good together.

I believe him and martins would be very good together. Agree. "Shola is a fans favorite" Glenn obviously doesn't read NUFC forums. Shola gets a very rough ride off a large number of the fanbase. They always forget his good points e.g. having a 1 in 2 goal scoring ratio under Roeder and concentrate on the bad. Personally I think a fit Ameobi, Owen, Martins and another striker is a decent strikeforce.
Skirge
Oh its the fashion to knock our own players, Shola is no different infact he probably gets more abuse than any other Toon player. The ad has heart though and will never give up for the Toon.
Nobody
I am extremely worried about Roeders opinion on Ameobi. I'm sick of seeing him playing, he shouldn't even be near a first team place.

Howaythelads
Ameobi is a donkey and belongs the beach, as I've been saying for what seems like years now. For however long it is I've been saying it, it's too bloody long. The sooner he's shipped out the better.

I know he's not exactly Van Basten mkII, but he'd really help us out at the minute. don't know why you think that tbh. its like carr coming back, its just going to make roeder play him instead of dyer up front (like sibi) which is not good for us, as him and oba could be a very good partnership in my opinion. Dave
It'll be nice to have some options, for a start.
Guest optimistic nit
i'd prefer roeder had as few chances as possible to make the wrong decisions. i bet my house if we get a fully fit squad at some time this season he'll play 'in the form of his life' carr instead of solano at right back, 'future england striker' shola alongside ameobi, parker and emre in centre midfield and Duff and Dyer on the wings dropping two of our star players this season (milner and butt) to the bench and one of our star players last season (zoggy) as well.
