"If all goes according to plan Onyewu could be one of two loan captures with St Etienne's Frederic Piquionne also said to be close to sealing a move to St James' Park.

"We want to take Onyewu and Piquionne on loan," said Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder."

More of a provider than goal scorer by the sounds of things. Spuds, West ham and Real Betis have been after him aswell.

Also they were said to have offered him to charlton for Marcus Bent in exchange.

Would give us another option up front, but would both he and Gooch be cup tied for Europe??

He can play, Gooch would be cup tied though.

1 in 5 for a striker is a little underwhelming, yes.

He's much needed reinforcement thats what he is, you're not going to get a super prolific goal machine on loan are ya? get real.

Older news but i found it interesting:

04 01 2007

St Etienne have rejected Lyon's bid of 5.5million euros (£3.7m) for striker Frederic Piquionne, labelling the offer "ridiculous".

The runaway Ligue 1 leaders are looking to strengthen their forward line for the second half of the season as they go in search of a unique quadruple.

But St Etienne have turned down what they see as a derisory offer for their star forward, who has received admiring glances from a number of leading European teams.

Bernard Caiazzo, co-president of the Rhone team, told club website www.asse.fr: "We have received an offer of 5.5m euros from Lyon, which for the best attacker in the league is pretty ridiculous."
