I think he can play as a striker or as a attacking midfielder.Yes he is not the best in tackling the opponents, but I think he is a big threat when it comes to attacking.I would still like to consider him as a midfielder though.

Right now we have to consider him a striker... but with Nicky Butt, Emre and N'Zogbia being unavailable it looks as though he has no choice but to play in the middle of the park. It's a shame because I think him and the Oba have looked good together.

Dyer is a striker, doesn't matter how unfair it is to Sibbers, I want him on the bench for a Dyer/Martins partnership.

Actually, I'd even prefer Sibbers to be AM (he played there in City didn't he?) to allow for Martins and Dyer

Butt is out for Fulham, yeah?

                Parker

Milner                        Duff

              Sibierski

      Dyer              Martins

Sibierski shouldn't be in the first 11 at all tbh.  Had a nice run where he kept scoring when we first got him but he's plainly not good enough.

I know, but surely better than Pattison? That wasn't how I want us to play when all are fit, just for the Fulham-game if Butt is out.

Agreed! He scored some vital and important goals for us but he isn't a good player and he looks clueless on the ball at times. Yesterday he was poor i thought.

Didnt Dyer tell SBR that his best position was upfront? I'm sure I remember hearing about that.

After tonight its clear Dyer shouldnt be played in midfiled!!!! Up front is where he's best and it seems he has a good understanding with Martins. When Dyer moved into midfield he wasnt all that good, He have a great engine but he aint a big tackler and when he does surge forward he leaves a huge gap in midfield. I dont even think he's a RW because he aint that good at crossing.

I suppose he could play attacking midfiled sat just behind the striker in a 4-51 but i feel his best position is up front where his pace is best used. He finishing has also improved.

interesting thread.

however i am one who has called for Dyer to be given a Central Attacking role from central midfield and i maintain this is his best position.

(wrote this in the match thread for Fulham)

"i saw in another thread people where saying Dyer was infective as a bombing on central midfielder against Aston Villa while he was not at his best on Wednesday i still feel this is his best position and Parker is a good partner when Michael Owen returns to partner Obafemi Martins i see Dyer and Parker being Roeder central two, a big feature of Sir Bobby successful sides was Dyer bombing on through the middle and Solano passing and link up and deliver off the right hand side and with the return to right back of Nobby tomorrow i am sure we will see a more effective Dyer tomorrow, for me its very important Solano and Dyer are in the same team as they link up fantastically."

main point is i think Solano off the right hand side gives the delivery and passes Dyer likes when coming short to link up or bombing on while i agree he was disappointing in this role against Aston Villa i feel the absence of Nobby delivery and passes Dyer movement thrives on was a major factor.

Dyer is basically invisible in central midfield for the majority of a match. Hes great at driving forward from central midfield, but he only does that when the team are counter attacking.

The rest of the time when hes not breaking, he plays a very simple, controlled game with simple passing. That would be fine if he was a powerhouse midfielder or anchorman, someone specialising in tackling or strength/aggression in that area of the pitch, but its just a waste of a central midfield spot if hes not.

Better utilised on the wings or up front, but at the same time, hed be a good option in central midfield for specific away games where we will be looking to counter with pace through the middle. Probably against teams with slow central midfielders who arent strong at covering, although thats pretty rare to find in the Premiership now compared to several years ago.

(to bring the debate up again)

i thought tonight was a classic example of my thoughts of Kieron Dyer as a bombing on central midfielder and on how effective he can be in this role.

the return of Nobby Solano passes from right back like i said was the key to Kieron Dyer thriving in this position his runs bombing on from central midfield were fantastic and very difficult for our opponents to play against and was a key tactical advantage for us.

for me Kieron Dyer best position is bombing on from central midfield and with the return of Michael Owen to partner Obafemi Martins in the coming months i think we will see Kieron in this position rather then just playing off Martins like in recent months.

Tonight merely confirmed it for me.

Not a bad performance, not a bad one at all, but that wasn't Kieron Dyer. He had very little influence on the game, apart from a good run for the first goal, and there was NAFF ALL movement upfront. Movement that he would have been providing had he have been played up there. Of course, there was no alternative this evening but for him to play in centre-mid - but that is the only time in which he should be used there. When we're down to bare bones.

He's a forward.

His passing range is just far, far too limited to be a central midfielder for me. Its not a part of his game, to spread the play, and hence I dont think hes ever going to be an effective central midfielder on a consistent basis.

Dyer played regularly in CM when we finished 4th, 3rd and 5th. Never liked it much myself because he leaves gaps, but anybody who says he's total crap there isn't really telling the truth. He's limited and we can do better, but at the moment apart from Emre we don't have anyone better.

He's a link-up man. Never a tackler, never an incisive passer, never a striker. Suits 'the hole'.

Aye, or an Arsenal style winger who constantly comes infield and links up, with the fullbacks overlapping.

that's what i think too.

the current problem with dyer is that he'll be played in 3-4 different positions this and next season - he'll swap with martin, owen, milner, emre, duff/zoggy. so we'll not get much consistency out of him.....

i still wouldn't mind another real striker though - dyer will never score a lot of goals.
