leffe186
The phrase 'The Liverpool way'. I love people using it, because every time it is aired it is exposed as a nonsense.

madras
european competitions being seeded and in leagues (purely for financial reasons). get back to 2 legged knock outs and if barce get man utd in the first round then so be it.

Hear, hear. The group stages are becoming ridiculously boring and predictable.
M4
Nah strongly disagree. Best compromise for not having some Euro Super League. Fine the way it is.
madras
Nah strongly disagree. Best compromise for not having some Euro Super League. Fine the way it is. the clubs don't want a euro super league, they know from current attendances and viewing figures that it wouldn't be viable on the financial scale it is now. M4
If they're already doing the group stages just for financial reasons then a Euro League would just take its place creating a bigger divide. In any case, from a sporting perspective it's better now. Qualifying for the elite European competition only to be knocked out after two games would make it hardly worth qualifying for in the first palce. Especially for more average teams like ourselves! Mr. Snrub
A knockout competition where anyone can get anyone would be so much better.

Tiresias
Stoke need to be given entry to champions league, and forced to draw with Barcalona just to finally fucking settle the "but could messi hack it in stoke on a cold tuesday night" debate. M4
regarding the second point, don't you remember the old knock out euro competitions ? What do you mean by that? Only the champions qualifying? Don't see the need to be that exclusive in the current climate. I think the current format is in place for a reason, it's mutually beneficial for everyone. Of course money will be one of the driving factors. Agree the seeding could toned down a little, though.
jdckelly
Honestly think the Europa League would be a lot better and more interesting if it was a straight 2 legged knockout competition rather than champions league lite as it is now

Agree the seeding could toned down a little, though. i agree about the "only cahampions qualifying " bit, but outside of that, the knock out system is more exciting for the fan and stops the clubs raking in money for dead games. the current format is designed to help the rich get richer and is dull for the fan. M4
Certainly a tricky balance and there isn't one easy solution. Just feel the current format keeps the most people happy.
madras
Certainly a tricky balance and there isn't one correct solution. Just feel the current format keeps the most people happy. honestly can't think of any fans i know that prefer the current system and all see it purely as a means for the big clubs to maintain their superiority. Mr. Snrub
The current format is really unfair on smaller teams. Look at Plzen, they won their domestic league last year only to be seeded 4th and be drawn in a group with Barcelona and AC Milan. What's the actual point? There is no entertainment value in these group stages, just a case of the big teams going through the motions. I know it's a cliche, but in a 2 legged knockout tie anyone can beat anyone. It would be so much fairer for everyone involved and would make the tournament so much more interesting.

At least that group is actual a group of Champions unlike say Bayern Munich, Napoli, Manchester City & Villarreal.

Fenham Mag
Just done a little 'mock' draw of the 32 teams , totally random , without any seeds: BATE Borisov v Borussia Dortmund Barcelona v Napoli Man City v Dinamo Zagreb AC Milan v FC Basel Ajax v Olympiakos Chelsea v Bayern Munich SC Otelul Galati v Lille Bayer Leverkusen v Trabzonspor Inter Milan v CSKA Moscow Man Utd v Real Madrid Villarreal v Lyon Valencia v Shakhtar Donetsk Zenit St Petersburg v Plzen FC Porto v Arsenal Benfica v Marseille APOEL v Genk Hypothetically , it would throw up some quality ties with lots at stake, it would be a hell of a lot better.
