Nike closing in on St James' Park deal - Exclusive

Nov 20 2011 By Alan Oliver

SPORTSWEAR giant Nike are hot favourites to sign a £10million-a-year deal with Mike Ashley to sponsor St James’ Park.

And People Sport understands that the firm’s world-famous swoosh trademark could be adorning Newcastle United’s old stadium and the team’s shirts in time for Christmas as part of a potential five-year agreement.

Other leading US companies have expressed an interest since Toon owner, sportswear tycoon Ashley, announced that St James’ Park would be known as the Sports Direct Arena until new sponsors could be found.

Financial experts have also talked up the likes of O2 and Virgin Money with the banking arm of Richard Branson’s empire taking over Newcastle shirt sponsors Northern Rock this week.

But Nike – who employ 30,000 people globally – are the main contenders.

Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias admitted: “There is little money anywhere in the United Kingdom or Europe.”

Small mercy? :undecided:

if this was happening imo they'd be doing it as a gateway move to head towards doing the same thing with bigger clubs like manyoo, barca etc.

can't see it happening like unless we've a way out of the puma kit deal, might be a buyout clause that's worth our while or something

nike would ultimately be a massive win, quality classy brand, so it's not nike it is?

quality classy brand ?

in football terms what's better than nike?  nowt

was just thinking can you imagine coming out the other side of this shitstorm with nike sponsoring the stadium, kits designed by nike and all the sportsdirect shit off the ground? :megusta:

pie in the sky shit

both do tacky and decent products, nikes advertising is classier because it is aimed at a differing demographic, outside of that they are more alike than different.

i wasn't comparing nike and puma but nike and sports direct and once you start in about classier branding you are kanckered really as it's all emperors new clothes. a sleight of hand to con you, a way of making you think the £5 shirt really is worth £75

 for fucks sake, what are you on about man, this is about the evils of capitalism now? i'd rather have nike sponsoring the ground and designing the shirts than say poundstretchers or iceland but hey let's be devils advocate about it all yeah

Reminds me of the takeover stories when the club would let the media know they were close to deals in order to flush out interest when in truth there was never any serious interest.

Blatantly going to end up being sponsored by Jacamo.

If we did get Nike as a stadium/shirt sponsor it may sway Nike contracted players

Ronaldo next year :)

nah, nike are only convincing you he's an 80m pound player through their clever marketing tbh...better off with pony or gola 'cause then we'll know we're sponsored by cheap shite

Here's an idea I came up with.

Probably will be laughed off though.

It could be a good opportunity for Virgin themselves and not limiting to just Virgin Money.

They could perhaps form a partnership with NUFC and not just a sponsorship deal. Northern Rock a few years ago created the opportunity to let fans pay for their season tickets over a period of time thanks to their financing packages. It would be possible for Virgin Money to do that again.

How about incentives for season ticket holders and club members? Free installation of Virgin Media services?, Cheaper flights with Virgin Atlantic? (some people on pprune seem to think Virgin will start services from Newcastle airport in 2013), cheaper contracts with Virgin mobile?

How about NUFC create a channel like other clubs do and it's exclusive to Virgin Media?

Aye i was thinking this the other day. Would be good like

Nike won't sponsor a Puma shirt.

And I certainly couldn't see them taking a shirt sponsorhip, a stadium sponsorship and a manufacturing sponsorship all with one club.

Have you read that article in the mike Ashley thread

Nike have got a huge relationship with Mike Ashley now!

Fantastic PR for a company would be to agree a joint deal for the stadium naming rights and the main kit sponsor. The company agrees the deal and their logo appears on the kit, only for them to not rename the stadium after their company name, and rename it St. James Park. Would be an intelligent way to get the hundreds of thousand of geordies to wax lyrical about the company, causing for fantastic PR. Also making world wide news.

No. Plenty of people would just say that that was the plan all along, they were in cahoots with Ashley, and they'd be paying for £10m a year for something they get no brand benefit from, bar 1 weeks worth of 'world wide news' if that.
