nufcjb
I agree with some earlier posts that the lopsided and unbalanced design already makes SJP such a unique stadium right at the heart of the city. But to compete with the likes of Liverpool, Spurs, West Ham and maybe even Everton, an extension would probably be needed and if we suddenly become an ambitious or even a successful club, a great looking stadium would help. Especially as the chance to expand the Gallowgate might be wiped out forever. We should never move away from SJP. The 3rd phase in the image below is of course virtually impossible http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x11/MartinLeRoy/Combined.jpg http://i.imgur.com/o9eiNDE.jpg What it would look like http://nufcblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/st-james-park-new.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZFX1912.jpg
sbnufc
The mock ups of St James' with the gallowgate extended look horrible imo Looks way better how it is now to me
M4
Really? I also love the lob sided design of the stadium but the three high tiers also looks pretty glorious.

What would the capacity be if the Gallowgate was extended ?
nufcjb
The lopsided design does make SJP unique and most of our fans love it. But if we were ever to become a bit more ambitious or demands for tickets goes up again, the only thing we can do is expand he Gallowgate seeing that we can't do anything with the East stand. sbnufc
Aye, I hate Celtic Park and St James' would just turn into that. It's unique(more so at least) as it is

nufcjb
Great post, would it not be possible to put another tier directly above the east stand but don't build out? Don't think that would be possible. Read somewhere that those buildings behind that stand need a percentage of sunlight so adding another tier would restrict that.

Guest chopey
Would you rather spend £15 million on a new player or new stand?
Yorkie
Would you rather spend £15 million on a new player or new stand? I'm sure we could afford to do both but, if it's one or the other, I'd rather we put money towards recruitment. We don't need more seats, we need to make the existing ones worth sitting on. Some housekeeping wouldn't go amiss, like.

Sir Toon
It's all about demand in both categories. although ambition comes into it as well. If we need players in order to progress then that's fairly obvious in it's importance as having to take priority but the more the club succeeds in ticking the fans boxes, the greater the demand will become. As it stands, we are not selling out the season ticket demand which must surely be capped off at around the 40,000 mark. If we know for a fact that cash sales on an individual basis is between 10-15,000 then the higher the season ticket sale will lower the availability. If we get week after week of people complaining that they cant get in and a waiting list is being talked about again then the demands to increase will grow. As it stands we're falling short on a number of options but a promotion and a marriage between Rafa and the board that seems to be working will sooner rather than later have this issue raised in public. Then could see the first real test in how big Rafa wants us to become and an owners reluctance to grow the football side of the brand.
Wallsendmag
Apparently season ticket sales will be capped at 44k, which baring in mind away fans will be allocated just over 3k seats, leaves just over 5k tickets (or 10% of capacity) for general sale on a match by match basis. 44k season tickets was the maximum reached when SJP was extended when Sir Bobby Robson was manager. Realistically we may hit 40k season ticket sales this year and could possibly go higher if we're flying high when part season tickets go on sale at Xmas. I don't think there's another club in the country that could command that sort of support after so many years of mismanagement and under achievement (see the literally 10s of 1000s of empty seats at Old Trafford and The Emirates last season when their fans thought they were under achieving). Clearly we need to get things right on the pitch, and certainly that will happen if Benitez is here for the next few years, before we need to consider extending. If things do click on the pitch extending the stadium to a 60k capacity is a must because we've gone from having the 2nd biggest stadium in the country a decade ago to the 6th biggest next season and in a few years time the 8th biggest when Spurs and Chelsea expand. TenkoDaLuz
St. James Park is beautiful to the eye. Never been there, hopefully one day I will. I guess I'll wait till you guys return to the premier. Then I will stay in Newcastle for some days and hang around with some of you and your families, inside your homes. I'll actually sleep in your beds, with you and your wives. It will be good. Stifler
Sports Direct man The extra lights on the Gallowgate roof do nothing for me either Aye, they should have been mounted like the ones on the East stand, though that one does now have them underneath and their no room for that to happen on the Gallowgate. Still though there could have been a way to put them out without it looking like a cheap bodge job.
