Actually going to agree (a bit) with James.

On song Dyer does give us something that most teams would love to get hold of - the ability to switch defence into attack instantaneously without simply hoofing it up to the big man (so to speak). Hes far from being the best in the world, but he does have immense pace, he can run with the ball, and he does have the ability to find the back of the net (given not enough though).

If we can replace that for £5m or bring in someone to give us something different (eg Deco) then go for it, based purely on the risk of another breakdown.

If we can't (and I suspect we can't) then it makes no sense to sell him unless Kieron has explicity asked to leave as he can no longer stay in the NE

Raises a good point - why do top managers like Curbishley and Jol want him?

Ever occurred to you that it's possible for ANYONE, even if they're the toppest top proper manager of all time to make shit decisions?

By the way, although I think that Dyer is one of the best on the planet when it comes to running on the ball with speed, he is far from the best player in the world, in fact the rest of his game is very limited. However any good manager knows that a player and a team should play to their strengths, and there are definitely worthwhile assets that can be obtained from a used correctly Kieron Dyer.

Bobby Robson did that, and we finished 4th, 3rd and 5th. Many forget Dyer's crucial role in many matches, including the 3-2 win over Feyenoord.

Other players that possess any real attacking attributes that can make the difference between defeat and victory are out of our reach. We just finished 13th remember? Thus Dyer is irreplaceable for us.

If he goes, the best we can do is reshuffle the team, make the most of the fact that we no longer have to accomodate a player that doesn't fit amongst the conventional tactical systems, and then spend the money on whatever areasare weakened by the reshuffle.

He crucially missed a sitter in the last minute and also it was his shit header that handed them their second.

You are talking shite.

A sitter he made for himself, and without him, it would have been 2-2, and we'd have never reached the second round.

Anybody who thinks Dyer is world class at anything is barking mad, he's not as bad as some say but nowhere even close to being world class.  He came here as a very good prospect but he hasn't moved on since, he's wasted his talent and we've had the pleasure of financing a very good lifestyle for him.

If he wants to leave then he's robbed this club for 8 years and thrown it back in our face.  He's had a lot of stick from some, he's brought it on himself by the way he's conducted himself when away from football, I don't know how he's got the brass neck to want away, I'd feel indebted to the club and fans if I was him.

Didn't really make it for himself, all he needed was to flick it past someone. If it wasn't for him it would probably still have been 1-2 anyway.

James isn't wrong, he's just grossly exaggerating. Saying Dyer is world class at anything is as silly as saying Dyer is a sh*te footballer. I think he felt the need to exaggerate his strengths because others have exaggerated his weaknesses. IMO he's decent, nowt special, and his inconsistency and injuries are a decent reason to sell him.

But at the end of the day we'll miss Dyer if we don't replace him, and if he stays injury free then someone has got themselves a bargain IMO. No coincidence that the richest clubs outside the top 4 are all (apparently) willing to take a chance on him, despite the injuries and inconsistency. That's because he's a good player.

No point standing in his way if his heart isn't in it, but if we don't replace him then we're weaker so this can only be seen as good news when a better replacement is found.

And you seriously believe that another player in the team would have reached the ball, and got in that goal scoring situation? And which player could we realistically bring in to do that for us if needed in the future? No-one, as West Ham or Spurs would have already signed them up rather than take a risk on an injury prone, over-paid, one-trick player.

The defensive question is irrelevant, we all know that Dyer can't defend. I'm arguing that we couldn't replace his attacking/matchwinning.

Averaged 1.5 assists per season, over the last 4. That's shocking.

Would probably be a bit higher if he hadn't been injured, but Dyer's game has never been about direct assists. Dyer's game has always been about collecting the ball in the defensive half, carrying it forwards into the final third, then delivering it to the feet of a more creative player, before continuing his forward run, dragging markers away from the real dangermen.

It wasn't a massivly dangerous header to knock away, it was regulation, and he fucked that up.

We could easily replace his "matchwinning".

We have plenty of players who can run with a ball at their feet. And for £5m? No ta.

Funny thing is, people say that, but cant come up with any realistic names that would trump Dyer.

Dyer is like Laurent Robert really. Few attributes ranging from good to very good, but quite shoddy in other  areas. However, Robert gets a higher proportion of plaudits as people remember the assists and the goals.

However, much of the key game changing moments produced by Dyer are forgotten about as they often come quite a few touches of the ball between the final goal, so will be overshadowed by Solano's pinpoint cross or Shearer's diving header in the minds of fans at the time, and wont even be shown in the television highlights package.

A good team has each player playing to their individual strengths. Thats what Robson did with Robert, Dyer and Shearer, catapaulting us into Europe. I hope Allardyce will do the same.

What a bastard thing to do to your team mates, supporters and employer with only two weeks until the start of the season.  A wasteful, arrogant lout fucks up his personal life (not to mention his health) and then screws his employer as well by declaring his intention to leave with only two weeks to find a replacement, adding another headache for the manager.  I've never met the man, but if even half the tabloid rumours are true about Dyer then I have no sympathy for his "family issues".

This just confirms that Dyer lives his life as he plays his football - selfishly.

Well this could be the 'BIG SIGNING' Mort and Ashley have been banging on about, he says we're going to shock the football world or something to that effect, he might go for someone like Aimar or D'Allessandro but id like to see him go for someone with a bit more pace than either of those 2.

SWP maybe, but i don't think he and Dyer are the same, SWP being a winger, whereas Dyer preferred to burst through the middle of the park, and running into the box taking away other defenders.

Looking forward to getting a replacement that can give more to our team.

Bouzza (an early call in the thread) was a fine call. I thought he had already moved earlier in the summer, but must have just been speculation.

Was really impressed with from even early in the season, quick, Strong, hardworking, good shot and very creative. he is more of a Left Sided player though isnt he?

Appiah and Baptista/Gudjohnsen/Deco would do me though.
