As much as I try to hate Keane for managing Sunderland I like him more and more everyday.

But would you let him walk your dog?

(I said _walk_)

Yeah, Keane is absolutely bang-on here.

I can understand players acting in the interest of their kids (i.e. Nobby); but turning down a bigger club for a smaller club because of things like shopping and lifestyle says an awful lot about their value as a team player.

Everybody makes similar decisions though, when they look to move.  So Keane has different priorities... fair enough, can't expect everyone (not every pro footballers) to share them.

I'm sure a fair few people on here could save some money by moving to Sunderland instead of living on Tyneside.  Won't bloody do it though. :)

To be fair to the players; would they, never mind their WAGS, ever go shopping in The Bridges? And, if he is having a go at Mido as one of the players (I can't think he is) - he is going to sign for the Smoggies......

FFS it's nothing new is it? It's been that way for as long as I remember. Honestly, it's probably better now than it was in the past.

Also we seem to manage to sign the odd "Top Player" and in my book if a bloke doesn't want to play for you cause his wife says "NO!", you're probably better off without him anyway.

Saying all that......... I wouldn't move to Sunderland, it's a dump!  :coolsmiley:

"We had a player this summer who didn't even ring us back because his wife wanted to move to London; he didn't even have the courtesy to pick the phone up to us and shopping was mentioned. ''

I think he is bitter. I agree with what he believes but wrong for saying it. Just keep your gob shut and get on with your job.

I blame the misses all the time when I don`t want to offend a mate. Its easier than hurting their feelings. This could have been the case. Rather than say sorry Keano, i respect you as a footballer but what the fuck are you asking me to do playing that shite, sorry but no! Much easier to blame the misses.

Thought that too. :)  People don't want to hurt his feelings etc.

"Yeah... contract?  Oh sorry Keano.  The dog ate it.  I'm off to <anywhere else>".

it's not just about what city to play in, it's the nonsensical publicity machine that these WAGS suck these footballers into.  it's not just, "does she want me to play football in the northeast or in london?", it's also "do i want to stay focused and committed to the game and stay in tonight, or do i want to get snapped walking into a bloody movie premiere because miss so-and-so is whining and wants her face in the paper like my teammate's bird, miss such-and-such."

keane makes a good point about these stupid photo shoots and whatnot - these WAGS all want to be Posh so theyr'e trying to turn their significant others into Beckham.

So no one else just thinks it's a crap excuse for not getting players in, then? Easier for mackems to stomach 'x player doesn't want to come because his missus is a dizy bint and he's got nee balls' than 'x player doesn't want to come because he thinks we're s*** and he doesn't want to be playing in the Championship next season'.

exactly.. why would a player want 2 come 2 a side that is tipped 2 be relegated. i'd make an excuse like that too.

probably a misunderstanding.. player x probably said "sunderland is crap" and keano thought he was talking about the place itself...

which is also crap

fair enough, keane's motivation is certainly suspect, but his point is spot on.  nowadays, people are praised for working hard, playing tough, and putting football first.  these used to be the standards by which professionals were measured, not the measure of an exceptional player.  now football is just something many these guys happen to be good at and something they do when not playing with their toys

for all the flack that a guy like michael owen takes, you have to respect the fact that he came here to play football, even if he wasn't crazy about living\playing in newcastle, he's here to put in his best and be a professional working his craft.

If this is about Keane's rant against the so-called WAGS of English football, then this is one thing that i DO agree with him about.

Its not just Sunderland who would have a problem getting certain players to sign for them - we also would have the same difficulty, despite Newcastle being one of the most lively & progressive cities in the UK .

People like Beckham's wife are a pain in the butt, and have far too much influence over the players - as Keane says, the players & wives that come into that category are weak and also thick - they probably still think the North East has stacks of coal-mines, chimneys with thick smoke, and all the fans wear cloth caps & have whippets/pigeons etc. etc.

This is a common phenomenum when the women are from London/S.east - most of them have never been north of Watford anyway, and foreign players , esp Southern Europeans, think that London is the centre of everything - even if the lifestyle is crap.

At least when Hamman & his wife were based in the North East, he did say that he really enjoyed all the lovely countryside around the area and they both used to drive into Northumberland etc at weekends or days off.

That is why it is SO important that NUFC has a really good Academy system, not just in the UK, but eventually overseas in order to dispel these myths and get in players who REALLY want to play for the club and not just pick up their oversized wages so their particular WAG can go shopping in London......

I believe that these WAGS were partly to blame for England's pathetic showing at last year's WC - too much concentration on pleasing the girls instead of total concentration on the games.

I have a whippet, ironically he's called Merlin.

Good post though.

I'm honoured - on both counts....!!

So the man who made mass player protests to referees the norm, and intentionally ended the career of a fellow pro now thinks it's not fair because no one wants to play for him - what a shame !

Following on from his boss saying it's not fair that some clubs can pay more money for players than them - shouldn't they just get on with running their own club and stop whingeing.

Yes Mr.Keen you have brought attention to the fact which everyone in the country already knew - Sundlund is a sh**hole and no decent player with any realistic option will want to go there.

However - truth is - Salford, Merseyside, North London not to mention Turin and large parts of Milan are pretty grim too but it doesn't seem to deter good players and their wives from going there to play. So maybe it's got a bit to do with football too.

Heres an idea, why doesn't Keen move his family into the "city" of Sunderland, and Niall Quinn could too to set a good example. Get some of their star players to live there as well and how about they do their socialising around the bars and restaurants of Wearside for good measure.

Truth is no player or senior member of their management team would dream of living in that cesspit and who can blame them.

Cut the hypocracy Roy.

Bit of a silly and pointless statement by Keane. Every now and then he likes to live up to the image of Mr Outspoken.

Not as stupid as his comments about Given playing 'too often' for Ireland. The tit.
