You'd be the best scout ever. Maybe just a bad game, he's looked real sharp in the league, like. I agree that he was awful today. But You'd be the best scout ever. Maybe it was nerves or inexperience, but he seemed out of his depth. Gomez also looked quite handy in the CL when he played tbh. I agree that he looked awul today, but on form and when played to his strength his first touch is quite handy and his finishing is suplime. I would't rate him on todays game...

He's 23 and plays predominantly on the left wing. A good player, but as long as N'Zogbia is staying not necessarily what is needed.

A forthcoming press conferences at Friday 3pm. We once had one when we signed Brett Emerton... Doh.

I would say the majority is (over)optimistic. Most think we have good chances to reach the semis or more. Though, there is still quite a big proportion of fans who are not overly keen on the new way of German football. Especially after the mixed results in the last year - especially the home loss against the Czechs (who we had totally destroyed in the first leg though). Problem for Germany will probably be the lack of quality in depths. In the provisional squad are even a couple of players from lower division clubs. We have a few good players, but too much rely on them. Lehmann in goal is past it. Hanging on to him could prove costly. In defence Lahm had a indifferent season. Metzelder is a perma-crock. So we are relying on Mertesacker, who is an exceptional talent though. In midfield all is about Ballack. Frings who was great at the last world cup had loads of injuries. Schweinsteiger was very poor. Schneider, who used to add some trickery to the team is injured. So we are lacking a bit of creativity and inspiration if especially Schweinsteiger can't up his game. Up front we are probably best. Though, Podolski had to play second fiddle to Toni and Klose for most of the season, even though Klose had a poor run of form in recent months. But if Gomez can keep his form, he could be one of the stars of the tournament. With being lucky with the draw (again), everything but making it to the quarters would be a total failure. Afterwards everything is possible, especially if we can build up some kind of momentum.

Doesn't look like anything new mate. At a Swedish forum anyone said that this had been said in the Turkish news (and maybe this it is) - Keegan has been in Turkey and met the chairman. - Newcastle has offered £11m but the club does´t want to sell because a few Germany clubs want him so the new asking price for him is £16m, not £12m. That would only make sense, if the German clubs offered a higher fee, something I very much doubt...

Iirc, Luque was in the Depor side that knocked us out of Europe about a month before we signed him. Ah well, forgot about that... Do you want any tips regarding this year's golden boot? Gomez? Nah, Baros might be a safer bet...

where do you live? the english PL, whether you want to believe it or not, has a higher profile than the german bundesliga and spanish PL...ergo elano will get more exposure for his "handful" of decent games (jesus) good insight on petrov, perhaps because of the lack of exposure i get to the spanish league (ahem) i still thought he was the pacy, tricky, quality left winger spurs were looking to pay 10m for and who turned to out to do a decent job in england in the end your point about luque only backs me up - you really think a player would leave deportivo where he played in the CL semis and challenged for the spanish title simply 'cause they missed europe and we were in the uefa qualifying rounds? get a grip man Of course does the English league gets more exposure. I won't dispute that. But if you'd ask people from Spain, Italy, France etc. who they think has a higher profile I don't think too many would rate Elano above van der Vaart. In regard to Luque: Yes, I think Newcastle had much more pulling power back then to attract higher profile players from foreign leagues.
-
You think Elano has a higher profile just because he played a handful of decent games in England for City at the start of the season? Wow. As for Petrov: He wasn't a regular at Atletico anymore when he left and they wanted to get rid of him as much as the player wanted to go. When we signed Luque, Deportivo had missed out on European football, while Newcastle had not and were willing to massively increase his wages. Totally different scenarios. Of course there is nothing wrong with going to try to sign players like Gomez. I am all for this. All what I am saying is that the chances of signing these players are incredible slim. And in case of Gomez I am not basing this on some hypothetical scenario, but on direct quotes from the player about his future plans.

Maybe so, but the Premiership is a big lure for foreign players these days. So many big clubs were linked with Modric but he ended up choosing between us and Spurs. I also believe that Mort and Ashley won't mind paying big wages for genuine emerging stars as opposed to over-the-hill celebrities like Henry. Of course the Premierleague is a big lure. But the attraction is considerable higher for someone from the Croatian league compared to someone who already earns good money in Germany. Gomez will leave Stuttgart. But this will most likely to be next year and most likely to be a club with a much bigger reputation than Newcastle who Gomez would see as a step down or sidestep, despite the lure of the Premierleague. You could be right, but I just think that younger foreign players are more likely to be enthusiastic to test their mettle in the Premier given the opportunity. It might be possible to earn good money in Germany or Holland say, but the best players in the world aren't usually playing in those leagues these days. I don't think it's an outrageous idea that we could bid for him at least believing we have a chance of securing the player. There are less good players playing there, but still the likes of van der Vaart, Diego, Ribery, Toni plus the majority of the German national team players. Of course the English league is the better and more attractive one, but teamwise that more or less only applies to the top teams, i.e. the so called big four. The rest are not more attractive than the top clubs from the domestic league. People who think that a club like Newcastle is more attractive just because it is playing in a more attractive league are really blinkered. What could Newcastle offer a player like Gomez to be a stepping stone (or the likes of Diego or van der Vaart who hilariously get named here as possible signings again and again)? They know that their performances get noted at their clubs, they play in European competitions and already earn good money. All that they are waiting for are offers from top European clubs, but not from mediocre ones.

He's actually not that well known anymore down here. He means nothing to the younger generations and the older ones often barely remember him playing for Hamburg - especially as the bigger successes at Hamburg came post-Keegan. Especially Tony Woodcock probably is better known, as he worked later in Germany again while Keegan is only remembered from his spell as English national manager, but not from his playing days for HSV. Nah, he's still talked about in Hamburg. Mrs P's dad especially. Yeah I know about his status in Hamburg, but it's all going downhill the further you move south.

First cousin, then brother and now uncle Your cousin is your brother, Or maybe is your uncle, You all love one another, It's the the LuaLua family.

Always wondered why that was Wolfgang btw mate? I know you're a huge Keegan fan, was that something behind it? Keegan was my first idol as a kid. So yes, I am literally a KBJ. The style of football and the fact that Beardsley and Waddle, two other players I really liked, were (ex-) Newcastle players helped, too.
-
During the 90s I thought it probably was a German thing and Klinsmann was to blame for the Spurs hype. But we always have some foreign workers or students playing in my pub team, especially from France, and I realised it's them as well. I use to play in my '96 Toon top and at best people are recognising it (and not asking me if I am a Juve fan), but when the discussion start about why I support Newcastle and not one of the more well known clubs it is often really puzzling.
-
Spot On. It's refreshing that a player moves for his career ambition and the chance of European football and a better coach, rather than moving to the club that offered him the better salary. Even if it is annoying that it's Spurs he is moving too. The ONLY area where they score, is that they are in London, and not every player would see this as the be all and end all. having won silverware this season and being in the uefa cup next season must count for something, surely? Well, Cardiff have just appeared in the FA Cup Final, and pompey have won the FA Cup. Are you saying both of those clubs, especially the winners, are also bigger and better than us ? no i'm not, you're the one bringing those two clubs into the thread, not me. the thread is about spurs, who have just won silverware and are in the uefa cup next season, and that has to be a draw for a player, sorry like, it seems beyond obvious to me. Well, so have pompey. Correct or not ? eh? you want me to validate whether you're statement 'portsmouth have won silverware this season and qualified for europe next season' is correct or not? why? spurs and pompey aredifferent clubs, different reputations, different managers, different squads and more importantly different locations. we all know going to london is a big draw for a lot of players, especially foreigners. the only reason i entered the discussion was to counter your belief that the ONLY area in which spurs 'scored' over nufc was that they're in london, i dont agree. recent silverware and uefa cup football + london team=bigger draw than us at present, pretty obvious imo. i mean, whats your point anyway? spurs aren't a bigger draw than us? its just that mort and ashley are so s*** they cant find a pen to seal the modric transfer? point is that Newcastle United are a bigger club than Spurs - as everyone said when Jimmy Greaves said the opposite - so I don't accept that - in spite of them being slightly better for the past few years [for the first time in a while] we can't beat them to our transfer targets. There is obviously a problem with how we are selling the club. As for Modric being told he had to sign for Spurs, thats a load of crap, no big money players like that sign for clubs they don't want to sign for. He preferred Spurs to us for some reason, or his club preferred Spurs' cash instead of ours. People are making out that Spurs are more well known than us. Well, they aren't. We have played in europe far more than they have in the last 15 years. We have signed big players, played in the Champions League, bought a player once who broke the world Transfer record, and have a manager who is well known everywhere. Thing is, despite all this being correct, on the continent Spurs are still very often considered to be the bigger or more "glamorous" club. At least that is my experience. It's really strange how often I had myself to point out to people what kind of club Newcastle is and justify myself to support such a club.

Which strangely is the same way how Oliver gets his stories. Just that he has given his cats fancy names like Ray Ranson etc.

Or other (more realistic) players who featured in the game. Delpiere for example isn't a bad defender. Boka is a good attacking minded left back, Magnin the other left back isn't too bad either.
-
No chance at all. If he goes it will be for a big club and most likely to be Spain (as his father is Spanish).
-
The ratios can be very misleading anyway. People would scream murder if we signed someone with a scoring record like Santa Cruz had when he played for Bayern...
-
I think the Bundesliga doesn't look as glamerous as other (more technical) leagues at the moment. Though I hardly can think of players signed from Germany who struggled in England.
-
Indeed, one of the most reliable and consistent midfielders of the German league.
-
If he was to leave Stuttgart this summer he would look at (and already has) better options than Newcastle.
