I don't think he was as bad as people make out. Obviously still looking for form, but apart from a really shocking 15 mins just before half time (being lucky to stay on the pitch) he was ok imho.

Yeah, there might be something in that. I'm not calling for his head. I think it's going to take time to sort things out. In a few months time, or a year or whenever I might feel differently, but for now, I think he has to be given a chance. I am generally still feeling positive (and I wasn't exactly overjoyed when Allardyce was appointed). There's a long way to go and there will be hiccups along the way, but I think what is needed right now is a bit of time and patience. This isn't a Souness or Roeder situation. I think if he can get to grips with managing a 'bigger club' then we can move away from the 'Bolton mentality', but it's going to take time. Allardyce to me looks capable to realize the demands the jobs brings with it. I am not that happy about some of his decisions or the style of play. But I think some of the criticism is far too harsh and far too many are rather seeing him as the Bolton manager than the Newcastle manager. An example is the long ball stuff. He said himself that when you play with the likes of Owen and Martins you have to play to their feet and to their strengths, so some of the dreadful long ball stuff we played in recent games for me (taking him by his words) is more to do with his inability to get his words to the players than him to really installing a certain way of (non-) style. I don't consider this season to be a necessary write-off, but I will judge Allardyce by the progress of the club (which doesn't have correlate to the league finish). So far I like what he does off the pitch but am sceptical about what is happening on the field. He is messing around a bit too much for my liking but I don't think what he is doing is as bad as some people make out. Even today I (think I) can actually understand some of his rather strange decisions and trying to field players who he thought would be best up for the demands of a passionate derby.

I think this is the part where Big Sam has still to come to grips with his job. Working at a 'big' club does mean different approaches to games. Playing for draws against arguably inferior teams is not an option. I don't think we were that bad. Sunderland were the better team who were fired up at home. The short spell after their goal proved what could have happened if we had put them more under preasure though.

Too much tinkering. They have an important game away at Stuttgart already on Saturday, so todays game didn't have top priority to them. They already rested some of their arguably best players this season (Ze Roberto, Demichelis, Toni only being a sub). Bolton had Diouf, Anelka and Jaaskelainen out to give Bayern a chance. Sure, I don't want to play down what has to be an incredible result for Bolton - especially concidering their injury problems. I rather wanted to give an explanation why he took off Ribery. Though, I don't think Bolton played that well. They started well and should have gone 2-0 up, but then were rather lucky that Bayern wasted so many chances and started taking off their best players.

To me it looks rather a special feature of the transfer window system in England. I can't think of any other league where so many of the deals are left until the very end of the window. E.G.here in Germany most teams have their squads more or less assembled before they start with pre-season training, not to mention the start start of the season itself. And there are normally not more than a handful of major transfers in the top flight once the season has started.

What did he say today? I agree with him keeping his head down though, comments directed at Rafa and the Bolton chairman are pointless and are as embarrassing as some of the s**** Shepherd came out with. He said that he has the knowledge how to beat Arsenal because he found them out in the past. Already too much for my liking and only good for motivating the opposition...
-
Whatever formation we played, I really would like Allardyce to keep a lower profile (has he started to speak to the BBC, though?). Comments like today's are only good to motivate the opposition. If he has a "master plan" then fair enough, but don't brag about it via the public media. We have got rid of Big Mouth Shepherd and replaced him with a manager who likes listening to himself as well...

To be fair, I think at a "bigger" club like Leeds it is a bit of a "more than ever" attitude because of the current state of the club where supporting it becomes a bit of a cult factor. They were down to averages around 22,000 in the last couple of seasons (which is still not too bad for a lower division club though).

Exactly my first thought. blueyes.gif

...develop over the long term? We need 2/3 the finished article now. Tbh, I wouldn't mind doing something like Bremen did two years ago in signing a great prospect in Diego and developing him into a world class player just within two seasons...

James as a moderator and contributor to a Newcastle fan forum. Not good enough and has been found out. It showed today that he hates being wrong, posts nonsense way too much etc. pp.

You'd expected Viduka to at least be able to control half the balls played to him. I really struggle to remember one thing Ameobi did right tonight. Ameobi wouldn't even make the England women team based on a performance like today.
-
Sorry Sam, but I just don't buy that I'm afraid. If anything we've been in the best position of the weekend playing on Monday. I don't either. A textbook old pro manager excuse after international week. The players who looked worst weren't even involved in internationals, i.e. Butt and Ameobi. Smith didn't play either. But at least Sam acknowledged that the players were bad and didn't too much talk up the performance. Just that his explanation for the crapness is more than questionable.

He's the boy alright. blueyes.gif Told yous And the best is yet to come, although there are a few things that we won't like around the corner. Mick, aye, it will be very interesting to see how he handles a bigger budget and what kind of players he'll go for. I think if the money is available he'll be in for Diouf in January, look to offload Ameobi, will maybe listen to offers for Martins and spend big on a more mobile striker to fill the role Viduka currently occupies in the forward 3. He's no Hitzfeld, though...

Move quickly for f*** sake?! We have to agree a fee, them agree personal terms, passa medical and get the paperwork to the FA in 55 minutes! I think most of this has all already been done and it is just paperwork now. As I said if we send the last confirming fax to the FA at 23.59 and tell Solano how sad we are that it did not work out for him because of the deadline then I am happy.

Would a loan deal really have been that clever? His contract was only running another year and I don't think he would have been any closer to the first team next summer...
