The LAST thing we need in midfield is a defender. Look at how we played last night without any cloggers in the centre and 2 proper wingers, something I've been crying out for all season. The very idea of reverting to Butt / Smith or even worse Hall in the middle of the park makes my blood run cold. You think we can play and win without a DM throughout the rest of the season? I certainly don't and Butt isn't up to it. I was kind of hoping Halls physical presence could offer something we've never had in mid before, height and strength. We can't play open all the time, you'll be the first to complain when were leaking goals costing us matches. If we had a decent DM we'd never have to see Butt again, or Smith, and we'd probably get a more attacking player to go alongside him getting rid of the rest of the non runners we've got in the centre.

Easily more than just a number, think it pretty much engrained into every Geordie conscious that the N9 means more than a squad number. That's how it was passed down to me, and am sure the tradition will continue. Right now none of the players are proven goalscorers and don't deserve the shirt. Having two wingers is a start. He might come in to his own now. IMO he more than anyone should benefit most from the new balanced team.

Needs a steady partner for that and vice versa, not sure if that is ever going to be the case, certainly not for the next couple of years. I mean he can still improve on them for himself aye, but who's he got to aim for, which player is it this week? Which players moves where? What moves will this player make? They are all pretty much different, its got to play some factor in it. He's not consistent enough to hold down a 1st team spot in the CCC, he certainly won't be ready to do so in the Prem, for me he just needs more goals right now, keep scoring and he'll keep starting and eventually someone partners him, long way to go though.

He's a useful tool. Take the tool part however you want.
