Are you joking? They're splashing about money as recklessly as Chelsea ever did. The only reason they haven't spent even more obscene amounts like the Robinho deal on a regular basis is that they are struggling to convince the big stars unlike Chelsea did with their location and already being in the top 4 back then. I mean, how is £13m for Bridge sensible? Nothing special leftback who had been rotting away in the reserves at another club is worth that high a fee and a £90k a week pay packet? He's been predictably poor for them since signing. How about £18m for De Jong? He's not worth that much anyway but doubly so when he had only 6 months left in his contract before he was available for £2.5m through a get out clause. They paid top dollar for Bellamy as well considering his age/injury problems/patchy form since leaving Blackburn. Now Barry is getting not a £60k wage, but a £60k RISE, according to one of the papers. And we could only get a basic fee for our 'rat jumping the ship' from them.

Think they need to build a reputation first. Buying the best of British and becoming a force will attract better players in the future. Snapping up the likes of Given, Barry, Bellamy, Bridge to give a solid experience core they can rely on in the premiership while landing the odd (or very odd in Robinho's case) big name player along the way is a good path to build the club up. Still a few English based names out there they can bring in to build a 4th place team and knock Arsenal out of the running before they need to shop abroad. Glen Johnson would be another excellent signing for them, if they can steal Tevez and possible Adebayour (or those kind of players who's futures are up in the air) they'd be a massive club before long.

Shearer not staying isn't the end of the world, we can pull in a good manager compared to the standards of the Championship, dare i say it a better one than Shearer is currently at. Think off the field he's exactly what we need, on it, think on it he's another Glenn Roeder, ie, hasn't got a clue. He's going to need the best players, the best facilities and the best staff in the Championship to get the club promoted, i think there are managers out there that we can get who wouldn't need everything spot on to get us out of it. But if he's willing to give us a chance then i think we should give him a chance, but a salary cap of £20kpw need to be put on the club by the board, that includes the manager because Shearer wouldn't get a 1/4th of that anywhere else.

Sorry but you cannot blame Shepherd for that one, he was in hospital with a punctured lung (or something like that) while Sir John Hall sold out to Ashley forcing Shepherd to either launch a takeover bid from his hospital bed or sell up.
