  1. Have we not made that mistake before though with young players losing form soon afterwards? Like who? Dyer and N'Zogbia both showed more promise before their pay hike than they did afterwards. My personal opinion is that you've got to be of legendary quality to be getting more than £10k at 21, you need to keep the players grounded and focused on what happens on the pitch. By all means offer Bassong an improved win bonus mind...

Yeah agreed, he may be picking a winning team right now, but as we've seen time and time again under Dalglish, Gullit, Souness, Roeder and Allardyce, Newcastle United has always had the players to pick up two good wins on the bounce, the real test will be over the remainder of the season. Three questions need to be answered over the course of the season: 1) Are the players currently performing inspite of Joe or because of Joe? 2) Will Joe show nous in the transfer market? 3) If he buys a transfer flop, will he admit to his own failure and drop him? It will take positive answers on all three questions for me to give him enough credit to see him as a viable long-term option. I've seen too many false dawns to give credit to someone based on two games. By taking this stance, I feel I admitting to my own mistakes with Souness and Roeder and Allardyce who won me over on the occasions he got a few wins out of some good players. Or perhaps I'm that batterred ex-wife too scared to love someone again? Joe still has plenty more to do to prove that he's the right man to move on with.
  4. Bassong is very good, but you've got to give credit to the intelligent partner he has who sweeps and allows Bassong to do the Hollywood defending. Take a bow Coloccini. All very reminiscent of some top defensive partnerships such as Ferdinand and Vidic in how the pair complement each other. Take note Steven Taylor - trying to play both sweeper and charger for several years has made a mess of our defensive unit.

Not taking the piss, don't worry. Obviously I want us to do well, but there are many challenges ahead, and people will forget these past two games if we fail to rise to these challenges.

That's needlessly harsh. Not really, the game was on a knife edge until Martins scored, had we lost we couldnt have really complained. we were well on top for the vast majority of the game man Well on top?, after we went 2 up I'll give you that but Pompey were the better side in the first half. We've seen numerous NUFC failures string a two game run together, and you are very right to question anyone who is supporting Kinnear based on two games.

What happens when he buys players, and then has to pick the team? If, and it is a big if, he keeps the form up, I may be happy for him to say if the people who bought Bassong buy all the players for him.

Still about five for me. Only four points clear, and experience tells me that you can't rule out a bad run cancelling out the progress from the past two games. First time in ages we've looked like turning things around though.
  9. Good result, was worried when we took an early lead and again when they equalised that it was going to be one of those days, and my Grandad was mocking my doom and gloom, but glad I was wrong. This post tickled me:
  10. According to Blackburn fans, Allardyce did a great job at NUFC leading us from 13th to 11th, and we finished just above the relegation zone because KK fucked it all up.
  11. What a stupid comment Libertine, Owen has always proved that he will give his utmost in all situations, so releasing a player we could get money for and who is even valuable in terms of goals this season would be akin to shooting yourself in both feet and your ballsack.
  12. Joe Kinnear is sounding a lot like Craig David at the moment: "New contract for Nicky on Monday, new contract for Shola on Tuesday, begged Michael on Wednesday and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, lost to Spurs on Sunday."

  14. I go by the Keegan philosophy: 1) Take a confident approach. 2) Keep the ball for as long as possible given the opposition fewer chances to score, and you more chances to score. 3) Have players good enough to defend when called upon. 4) Have players fit enough to last every minute of the season. Only difference between KK and Capello is the tempo they choose to play in my opinion.
  15. Portsmouth share with Southampton, Bournemouth, Manchester United amongst others.
  16. Would prefer Jonas on the left and Geremi on the right. He's a complete liability on the ball at times to be honest letting teams hit us on the counter. He's a good player to have on the pitch late on in games when chasing a result, but thats about it.
  17. There is going to be a meeting on Tuesday. EDIT: Source is Kinnear BBC interview. Kinnear is prepared for the possibility that Owen will anounce an unwillingness to sign a contract at this meeting.
  18. Keep the faith. ....so, drama queens, now what? I think you are being a knee-jerk drama queen bumping the thread to try and make a point off the back of one game to be honest. Not at all... last week I was questioned for being confident about our chances. I'm just fishing to see who now thinks, after today, that we'll still be relegated. Let's see how many of those who were arguing last week still want to argue. My position has remained the same. No knee-jerking from me. I'm just out fishing for knee-jerkers. Fair enough, and apologies if I bit too hard. My position still remains the same, we are in the most vulnerable position we have seen ourselves in during the 14-15 years I've supported the club, our remaining home games should theoretically be more difficult than the ones we've already played, and we've won one away game all season. Meanwhile, there is permanent uncertainty plus a manager who fails to strike confidence amongst the fans. I've seen too many false dawns to change that opinion on one game. This could just be the home game versus Alkmaar all over again.

  20. Even better if one of Adams' cronies like Dixon or Keown are on as well. Or Adams himself. He always pissed me off when he turned every random question into a discussion about Portsmouth.
