Newcastle United 0-2 Manchester United (26/02/2023)

Two moments and we are buried. Been the better team. That's football. -
My son's obsessed with this wrestler theme. I've been singing karius all week.

On the upside, today has prepared us for what to expect next week and exactly how the last two finals at wembley went. Make mistakes, get punished. Not clinical and waste opportunities, get punished. This is a huge wake up call. Coming into the final in form or frustrated. Can go both ways. Interested to see how we line up. Losing Pope is an absolute gutter though. Hammer blow. Abundance of negatives aside. AsM and Isak linked up nicely at times. It's the poor finishing that has costs us points the past few months.

We are in a transition period of not really being quite good enough to take everyone attack vs attack but we are also past the bunker down and defend for 90 minutes and shithouse. Big call on what we do next week.
-
We could also he 2-2 in this game with the amount of shots and hitting the bar twice. Just praying we get through this half without injuries or suspensions!
-
Ha. Fair. Anderson in goal. He will get a fair start yet.
-
Edit. Pedantic, knee jerk overload posing.

Absolutely but managers and analysts plan for all occasions, have basic back up plans if players are injured out of nowhere or suspended. Everyone knew Dubs was cup tied, why keep him on the bench if the worst happened and pope got injured or sent off. Now we have a cold keeper that hasnt played a competitive match for almost a year, Feb 28th last year. This 75 minutes of match fitness could make a world of difference to next week. Maybe the fact it was playing Liverpool was also a factor?

While no one is going to predict the Pope red. Seems surprisingly short sighted for how detail Howe is to not think of this type of scenario. Why wouldn't he have put Karius on the bench today. Just incase. How many competitive matches has Karius had in the last year of longer?

Trippier again. Fuck.

If the Davies rumours were true I'd sacrifice having Robinson and another player just to get Phonzy here. He would be the perfect fit for this club, city and the league.

Just gutted with this, even if it felt inevitable at this stage. The fact he was due to fly to his family but changed his mind to stay, likely to celebrate his goal/win with the team is even more gutting. Imagine being a team mate that encouraged him to stay and visit family later. Sliding doors. Horrible stuff and thoughts and prayers to everyone close to him and those affected by this disaster.

I think worst case he will be the new Moyes. Don't begrudge him the move up. It was a big opportunity. Hindsight and all that. Should have stuck and waited for the England job.

Great goal ward prowse! Southampton beating Chelsea love it.
-
I thought that was still a thing, we just wanted to do it the right way and grow naturally. Thought you could still apply to jump up to the PL2 or something. Could be a very long journey if not.
-
Looks like it's going to come down to that match. Same as last season. Wonder if they will just apply to go up, if they miss out again. Frustrating with just one team going up. The players and staff have been doing a great job.

I think most here were happy to have him coming back from injury. Also thought it was pretty unanimous he barely put a foot under Howe and he got plenty of credit for it. Also fair to say there are only a few people if any questioned his ability. Limiting pace aside. However his application and motivation prior to Howe followed the same pattern at every club and under every manager. It was widely scrutinized with good reason. I'm sure there have been plenty of OTT reactions. There are for every player here but especially those that give people the reason to be skeptical. Jonjo certainly did. Not sure much of the critique was for his ability. I'm disappointed we didn't keep him until summer but also saw why we shifted him, like most of us I thought he was getting shifted with a replacement in the bag. We have gambled and in hindsight I'd rather we kept him until his contract ran down. He had a nice redemption arc and I'm sad to see him go.

We got a banner with him and Sir Bobby yet? Not legit until then.

On the upside we are trending to end up where most of us were realistically hoping for but with a cup final added in. Just so frustrating right now. Hopefully we can find that break through in form next week or in the cup final. Might be a case of who is fit to play at this rate.
