We've clearly sounded Botman out for a while, it's been reported pre-window by Orenstein and the Athletic and also likely that pre-window we learned that he'd be keen to join and we were waiting for Lille to be open to negotiate a sale. If it was as easy as negotiating everything to go through on Jan 1 then deals would happen like that all the time - but they don't. Because some teams literally don't need the money, want the money, want to sell, care to sell, or will try and squeeze out every last penny and sell the player on deadline day. You can't acquire anything that isn't truly for sale and there clearly is no desperation for that from Lille.

Also bid-ask spreads happen in negotiations all the time - they clearly don't want to sell him and didn't even believe in their own valuations as they kept changing. If we bid X the first time we have no fucking clue it would have been accepted or not.

Lille don’t appear to be open to selling, various reports have said we’ve bid what they asked and they’ve been coming back with different requests and structure. Pre weekend apparently we bid exactly what they asked for. It appears a seller is not willing or that desperate to get rid or the deal would have been done.

Falling out with Rafa is one thing. it’s taking himself out of contention to play and having that type of attitude when he’s in a dressing room with some top top players around him. Whichever way you cut it, he’s not honoring his obligation to the club, fans and his teammates.
