Newcastle v Notts Forest - 19:45 Monday 29/03/10 Pre-match thread.
Teasy replied to The Prophet's topic in Football
Ok I spent the last hour counting the seats on nufc.co.uk since I'm off work and just waiting for the match Almost 49,000 sold so far, so we'll probably sell over 50,000, but wether that number will actually turn up on a Monday night is another question. -
Can't believe they play 162 games in a league season! I was wondering how they managed gate receipts of £145m last year It's not really about what the Yankees own, it's about what the Steinbrenners own. The Yankees own 36% and the other 64% is owned by Goldman Sachs and Raymond Chambers (who used to own the Nets). Either way they don't recieve anywhere near all the revenue from the network, they recieve a rights fee which will be a fraction of the total turnover.

 aye, the other 18 paragraphs reek of indifference You can really tell they've tried hard to black out the last 20 years of Football -
We're a couple of good players from being better then them. Debatable. Of course, just my opinion looking at it player for player. Harper Taylor Williamson Coloccini Enrique Routledge Guthrie New Gutierrez Lovenkrands New Assuming those new players are of good quality of course.

Checked on the net and apparently the TV money goes to the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network. The network shows New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets games and made around £227m in revenue last year. The Yankees themselves own 36% of the network, can't find any info on what percentage of the revenue they recieve though. This thread will soon be the Football and Baseball finances thread Can't believe they play 162 games in a league season! I was wondering how they managed gate receipts of £145m last year

The Yankees wage bill is £134m which the biggest in Football can certainly afford. I'd be interested to see a breakdown of their total revenue, just because I like numbers

Another thing they could do is what Espanyol did when they were broke and they were still fan-owned (so money couldn't be injected directly). Their sugar daddy bought players on his own accord and he loaned them to Espanyol free of charge. What I mean with all this, is that this rule can probably easily be circumvented if someone really wants to. There's ways around anything. But like with any other rule there's nothing stopping Uefa from investigating anyone that tries to bypass them and punishing them for it.

Is Mike Ashley steering Newcastle United in the right direction?
Teasy replied to LooneyToonArmy's topic in Football
I don't think we were neccesarilly a cert to go down in the future anymore then we're going to be next season. IMO we were shackled by dead wood players and an idiot owner who couldn't get managerial appointments right. The deadwood was out of contract and would have been released anyway. The idiot owner is still going to be around next season. Meanwhile just to finance the relegation we've had to lose a few of our better players (Bassong, Martins and Beye) and now owe big Mike another £20m. Winning so many games may have given the team confidence, but its come at a huge price and could turn out to be false confidence without the neccesary investment to replace the players we never wanted to sell in the first place. -

We needed relegation? I have to disagree completely. Most of the deadwood we got rid of in the summer/january were coming to the end of their contracts and would have gone had we stayed up: Owen Cacapa Viduka Geremi Duff may have stayed but other then that we could still have gotten rid of most of the shit while also keeping more of our good players like Bassong, Martins and Beye. It also would have meant that Ashley wouldn't have had to put another £20+ million in just to keep us afloat this season, instead we'd be looking profitable for the first time and that money could have been spent on improving the squad. -
...and what did he do? Do you see something in him that Schalke didn't ? German clubs rarely make mistakes when giving players free transfers or deciding they are surplus to requirements.. He is not going to get any better at his age, so I would be interested in your view as to whether you think he will score 15 goals next season ? He scored 3 goals in 8 games. Not bothered what happened at Schalke, because that's nothing to do with Newcastle United. I prefer to watch the player and judge him on his performances. He was decent in the 8 games he played last season in the Premiership in difficult circumstances, so there's no reason I can see that he shouldn't be kept on as backup next season, and no of course I don't expect a backup player to score 15 goals. ..So if you consider him a back-up player, then who do you think that NUFC are going to be able to get to go up front better than Kuyt ? There's a hint of unrealism about this because a) you consider Lovenkrands, a player older than Kuyt, to be a better bet in the Prem despite the fact he has played only 8 games there and Kuyt has played 4 seasons with a consistent scoring record ; also, you say you are not bothered about what happened at Schalke - a bit arrogant, don't you think ? Schalke are a better supported club than Newcastle United in Germany and are more respected in European football than NUFC...perhaps if Allardyce had been MORE bothered about what happened at Man City with Barton, we wouldn't have ended up with a player who has been a constant liability and cost us a fortune in wasted wages etc. Lovenkrands would not have reached the age of 30 and be playing for a CCC club after being given a Free from the only major club(unless you consider Rangers a top club) he has played for, unless he lacks something at the top level - and that is where NUFC should be aiming. I notice you didn't address my point about David Kelly, and that DID happen at NUFC and is more relevant to the current situation I didn't say a word about Dirk Kuyt or David Kelly. I said that we've all seen Lovenkrands play in the Premiership and IMO he's more then good enough to be a backup striker in our squad. This is after you said we should wait and see what he's like in the Premiership and that you'd left him out of your list because you didn't think he was good enough. Now you're saying that I'm arrogant because I'd rather base my opinion of Lovenkrands at Newcastle on his time at Newcastle then on how well he did at a different club in a totally different league? There's nothing arrogant about that.. Also what does the size of Schalke's fanbase or how respected they are have to do with wether or not Lovenkrands can be a squad player for us next season in the Premiership?, nothing what so ever. By the way, I hope to god we can get someone better then Kuyt because he's just not a very good goal scorer, definitely not what I'd look for as a first choice player, especially with the fee he'd command.

Neithers one of my friends, but that's just because he's on the dole and can't afford it

We're talking about £16.99 for line rental, free calls and broadband, can't get much cheaper then that. I think TalkTalk are the cheapest (that's who I use) and they're only about 50p less.

Plus we'd still have a game in hand. -
I would say yes but nonetheless the wages would be unreasonable. Zaragoza does want to get rid. Google says he's on €2.2m a year. That's... around 35k a week in pounds? About £38k, not a big wage at all, but wether he's actually worth it or not I don't know, probably not?
-
People kept talking about how quick this league was and that we didn't have the pace neccesary I thought it was a shit league and that most teams lacked any pace or quality at all.
-
Our squad was "pretty much intact"? We basically lost our entire strikerforce in Owen, Martins and Viduka, we lost arguably two of our best defenders in Beye and Bassong as well as losing Duff, who like it or not, was our most productive midfielder last season going by goals and assists (IIRC, not sure on that one). That is six first team players, or more than half a team, who were lost and not replaced. The only part we "managed" to keep somewhat intact was our shite midfield, which we all would have said needed strengthening, even for this division, and that didn't happen either. I'd say we had every right to expect us to struggle with the team we had going into this season. We lost 3 players that were of any real importance to us (Martins, Beye and Bassong). Lovenkrands was a more important player then Owen and Viduka was finished, Duff was borderline and may have done well but we wouldn't have wanted him when we got back up. A lot of people thought we'd also lose Gutierrez, Coloccini, Taylor, Carroll, Enrique, Lovenkrands and Guthrie.
-
Did anyone have a good view of their offside? The highlights on the TV are shit and don't show wether it was really offside or not. Obviously its not important now, but I just want to know
-
They're allowing them to complete transfers but still not allowing those players to play for their new club, so its not really that different from what any club can do at anytime during the season.
-
We're promoted, accept it you negative twats.

You've missed Lovenkrands from your list - unless this was intentional? Kuyt's a hard worker, but he isn't good enough to be play upfront at Premiership level - that's why Rafa has shipped it out on the right. He's awful there too. If you think Kuyt is awful, just wait until you see the likes of Lovenkrands in the Prem - I missed him out on purpose because I don't consider him good enough for the Prem. KK let David Kelly go after we won promotion despite him being the club's top scorer because he didn't think Kelly was good enough for the Prem - and believe me, Kelly was a better player than Lovenkrands and was younger too. People thought John Tudor was 'awful' playing alongside Supermac, but Macdonald appreciated the space Tudor created for him by his selfless running ; Kuyt is a similar player, but more skillful - his goals record with Liverpool averages at 1 per 3 matches over 4 seasons - are you saying that Lovenkrands will do that in the Prem? And, as for Rafa not playing him up front, it seems to me that Rafa's judgment is being questioned by a number of Liverpool players right now - don't expect him to be there next season...! That is also the reason why I think Kuyt could be bought - he has been there 4 years, there are going to be changes and players like a new challenge..he is also approaching 30, so the fee wouldn't be too high for Ashley..!! We've all seen him play in the Premiership, he played 8 games last season you know ...and what did he do? Do you see something in him that Schalke didn't ? German clubs rarely make mistakes when giving players free transfers or deciding they are surplus to requirements.. He is not going to get any better at his age, so I would be interested in your view as to whether you think he will score 15 goals next season ? He scored 3 goals in 8 games. We've all seen him play in the Premiership and he's easily good enough as backup. He's much better equiped for the league then Carroll at the moment IMO.

Our away record in the PL, has been sh** for a while. Win/Draw/Loss 09 - 2/6/11 08 - 3/5/11 07 - 4/3/12 06 - 6/2/11 05 - 3/7/9 04 - 2/12/5 03 - 6/4/9 02 - 9/5/5 He was talking about our away record in the Championship. Obviously I expect next season our away form will be nowhere near as good as this season.
-
We have one player on loan. I wouldn't say we're so much low on numbers either, just low on quality. We need to replace the likes of Nolan, Smith, Ameobi, Butt, Pancrate ect with better and I wouldn't make any assumptions at this point that Hughton believes any of those are good enough for next season just because they're important this season. Also 31 points out of a possible 57 away from home isn't shit in the slightest.
