Ben Arfa's goal record is around a goal every 5 games, Gutierrez record is a goal every 24 games

This news doesn't change anything so I don't know why the thread titles been changed. The Marseille president said they had accepted our offer and we just needed to talk to the player. What he's said today doesn't contradict that. He's just denied that the deal has been completed.

I'd love to see some of the reaction on here if it did happen

Just what's been in the papers since really. President of Marseille says they've accepted a 800k Euro loan deal from us and we're supposed to be meeting them today, he said the deal should be done by Tuesday or Wednesday.
  7. We finished above West Brom in the relegation season and ahead of them again last season, since then they haven't improved more then us, I'd absolutely expect to finish above them (even if we didn't sign the likes of Ben Arfa).

Right, fair doos. Fingers crossed. If this deal works out exactly as the title suggests, it's a seriously fucking good signing. We'll have seriously pulled the rabbit out of the hat with this one if it comes off. Would be an amazing deal IMO, still not sure if we'll really pull it off. I just hope the people in charge realise just how good a deal this can be and don't waste a moment in getting everything sorted, because to miss out on it would be sickening.

EDIT: Didn't read the earlier post. I'd imagine he means the lack of any denial from Hughton suggests we're in for him, not that we really need that considering all the other info.
  10. so if the power was in your hands who would you hire to replace him? Maybe Martin jol. For me if the manager picks the right team a result can be blamed on the players, for me hughton often selects the wrong team, ir Guthrie on the right and that will be found out this season The same Martin Jol who turned down the UEFA League finalist Fulham to stay at Ajax (2nd in Eredivise)? No seriously, who would you hire to be the manager? Uefa finalist with no hope what so ever of doing better then they already had.

    Sunderland...

Best thing they could do is get him somewhere to live in Newcastle.
  12. Decent run out, had we been treating the game as seriously as Rangers I doubt we'd have lost it.
  13. Perch was nowhere to be seen, Enrique would have snuffed that out.
  14. For every player that's gone on to do better elsewhere theirs plenty of others that haven't. For instance Parker to West Ham, even in the same transfer window and to the same team you have Dyer and Solano..
  15. Not really, we weren't in the Premiership last summer, the drop in revenue meant costs had to be cut and money had to be brought in. But you could counter it with any other random set of transfers during our time under him in the Premiership, which is why I said its not worth looking at it that way. Historically in the Premiership just about everything (give or take 5k) that's been brought in through player sales has gone into buying new players.
  16. Taylor's contract ending would effect the size of fee for him probably, lucky to get 4 million for him. Enrique's reputation outside of Newcastle is very low, I doubt any team would be prepared to pay more than 5 million for him. Carroll is probably our most sellable asset, young, English and lots of potential, could get up to 8 or 9 million for him I think. So if we got the best we could get for that lot, that would bring in 18 million, Ashley never gives back all the sale money, lets take Milner money as an example because it was the last big sale when we were in a position to re-invest. From that 12 million he gave 6 million back for the purchase of Xisco. So 50%, I don't think we could get 3 players of sufficient quality to replace Carroll, Taylor and Jose for 9 million. By the same reasoning you could say that Ashley has a history of giving back 4 times the money we sell a player for because we sold Faye for £2.5m and bought Coloccini for nearly £10m. Looking at an isolated set of transfers doesn't tell us much. So far Ashley's strategy has always been to break even on transfers, so either all the money brought in is spent or all the money spent is gained back over the course of the year. Could Hughton bring in 3 better players then Carroll, Taylor and Enrique for £18m - Perch?
  17. Jesus wept. Imagine how much Gazza or Beardsley would be worth. I was never as much a Beardsley man as I was a Gazza man, so dunno, but even ignoring the MilnerLescott distortion, Gascoigne, for me, would be 50m plus, easily. Beardsley wasn't as naturally gifted as Gazza, but he made so much more of the ability he had. He was a bit of a one off IMO, a player with amazing talent and work rate who was brimming with enthusiasm and gave everything every time he stepped out on the pitch. That's not a combination I think I've seen since, he'd be priceless today.

I'd agree with Enforcer in general, I'll just add though that when he does get it right he's absolute magic.
