One young player with potential, one who's undoubtedly good but not quite the player he used to be and another who looks very good but has so far only played in the Croatian League. At the same time they're going to lose there best player by a country mile. I just don't see how those three transform a squad from similar to ours to a mile ahead? This is a case of people getting caught up in hype IMO. Agree with that. you'd also have agreed with it this time last season ? No last year I thought we had a chance of finishing above them. I'm saying at this moment in time, with who they've bought, they ARE a mile ahead of us in terms of quality. I haven't read the Turan thread, but if we're interested in that sort of player that's a good sign and we can also mount a serious challenge for fourth in maybe 2 years. But you can't deny you'd swap their squad for ours right now, surely? Hold on, who have they actually signed? Not just players there linked with, because that's everyone, but players they've actually completed deals for? Two players isn't it? One a young lad who isn't even likely to have any impact next season, if he has any at all. Those two have made there squad change from similar to ours to a mile ahead in your opinion?

Though I think this might get us banned Agree 100%, he doesn't have a single good thing to say about Newcastle United.. I seriously don't believe he's a Newcastle fan, which would be fine if he didn't pretend to be one so he can troll the forum. So yes you have my vote!

He got the ball in basically the last chance of the game with his countries hopes of going any further in the competition riding on what he did with it. Yet he was calm enough and confident enough (at 21) to take it on and get into a shooting position, and strike the ball very well (looked to be heading to the side of the goal to me as well). Was it the best goal of all time?, no. Would it have gone in without the deflection?, quite possibly. Should it be downplayed either way? no. The way I see it he played well despite being hindered by the conditions and scored an extremely important goal for his country, simple as that. He definitely impressed me.

There's a bit of a difference between "the keeper would have had a better chance of saving it without the defection" and "the keeper probably would have saved it without the deflection which means the goal was more about luck then skill". I never would have argued with the former.

He had an ok game, not bad, but also no wanking material either (as it seems to some). Why do deflected goals not make a difference? Nobody wants to take the goal away from him, but 'keeper would probably have saved it otherwise, so it was less a matter of skills than of luck. 9m is overpriced imho anyway and I can't see any increase of value just based on this performance (which would be ridiculous anyway, even if he had played really well). How the hell do you know? He struck the ball well and for all we know it could have flown past the keeper without any deflection. Because the 'keeper was already diving down in the right direction and the ball didn't have any real pace? It was hardly a wonder strike and I'd be pretty unhappy if the ball would have went in undeflected tbh. The shot had plenty of pace, and while the keeper was diving it was anything but clear that he'd have gotten to the ball. You'd have to spend a while watching the incident from numerous angles to have any idea, you're just making assumptions.

Modric a far better player? Have you seen them both play a few games Parky or just basing that on the Euro's? If its the Euro's Modric played well for about 25 minutes and scored a pen, which lets face it is just about the least impressive goal you can score.

He looked a bit like Emre but with more skill to me, and AFAIK he's not injury prone.

I wouldn't buy Deco even if he'd come. He's 31 in two months and they want, what?, £15 million for him? Then he'd want massive wages on a decent length contract. We'd end up spending £30 million on a player who's legs would fall off within a couple of seasons, he'd end up like Viduka but on even higher wages, hobbling down to Gregg's on his zimmer frame to spend his £100,000 a week on sausage and bean melts.

Yeah like I said, I havent followed that closely. Who confirmed their valuation? They wanted £10.3 million (which probably was over there normal valuation due to the Euro's coming up) and apparently we offered £9 million.

Not talking about being high profile, I'm saying that its not guarenteed for a players price to increase during a tournement. Had Turan had a bit of a nightmare today with Turkey crashing out of the tournment then I really couldn't have seen his price rising. definitely not, but it is worth his club waiting to see if it does, theyve nowt to lose. I agree they didn't have anything to lose given the current situation. But what this discussion stemmed from was the suggestion that Newcastle had taken a risk by not offering more money in the first place. Offer over the players valuation and Galatasaray do then have something to lose if they reject it.

He's played 20 something games before the Euro's, so a few games won't make much difference without a good performance or two to catch the eye. Obviously the more games for your country can't hurt. What I was saying is that if we offered over Galatasarays valuation of the player I couldn't see them telling us to f*** off because they know he'll be worth even more after the Euro's.

Aye, cos that happens all the time. Even if a player is completely s*** in an international tournament, his club can and will say 'he now has more international caps - give us more money'. I was exagerating you know Dave. I just don't know where people get the idea that every players valuation will sky rocket after a tournement no matter what. It just doesn't work like that at all.

We need 5 or 6 players, so why waste half the likely transfer budget on him? Well why waste is on Modric? I know Spuds fans would disagree but Modric isn't 5-6 players on his own Newcastle seem to think we can afford to spend that kind of money on one player, so my question is if Modric was worth it then why not Turan?

Agree with Kimbo, we put in a £16 million bid for Modric, so why not offer something similar for Turan before the competition, with Galatasarays money problems they wouldn't be able to risk turning down that kind of offer.
