Wanker He's from that neck of the woods, like, so might have just been happy to return home to what is *spit* a very good club. Saw my cousin from Hertfordshire at a wedding recently and was interested to find out he's good mates with Bentley, went to school with him and still keeps in touch (goes to birthday parties, etc.), the Spurs deal has been wrapped up for that long at least (3 weeks now), as far as he was aware. Apparently Bentley didn't say too much though, which I suppose was fairly sensible of him. Think Tottenham turned out to be the best of his options when he realised there was no interest from the CL clubs.

I wasn't just talking about Ashley, for the record. Was more to do with the general "comfort" we've had of being the NE top dogs for a good while. Can only be good that 'Boro and Sunderland push us on to bigger and better things. If Sunderland start doing better - in particular - and look like overtaking us, then it can do nothing but increase the drive/determination to beat them by any means necessary, which is how it should be.

They're improving like, I'm surprised they've managed to attract Chimbonda, Malbranque and Diouf - three players who (if we're talking purely in ability terms) would nicely slot into our own squad and push for first team places. I'm surprised there weren't bigger clubs in for them three. Obviously it's not as simple as that like, but you'd expect those three to do well for them if they stay fit. Tainio is hardly a bad player, either. If they can keep the likes of Edwards fit as well, then they'll probably do alright next term. Surely it can only be better for us if Sunderland look like improving as far as motivation goes (for the owner, the board, the staff, the players and the fans). Might be the kick up the arse that we all need if they can start putting it together again.

You'd think Taylor would be the one playing right-back out of that line-up. Makes sense to put Bassong in the middle alongside Cacapa, for the experience/language.

That's a horrific story, no matter how it actually happened. Gutted for the lad.

EDIT: Bit of a step up from the likes of Andy Reid and Phil Bardsley, aren't they?

Why do we need to buy a player for the position that we are most covered for? Just because we're "most covered" there doesn't mean the players we have are of high enough quality and/or will even be staying at the club. SWP is top-class, we might actually have a chance of getting him, and the thought of him on the right and Gutierrez on the left would be extremely exciting. He's the type of player that could take us to the next level, much like a Bentley would, and those are the types of players we could do with signing. Obviously we need a couple of defenders, a central midfielder and a striker too, but as far as an individual signing goes, SWP would be the one for me (which is what I thought the initial question was about: "who could we bring in that would excite you?")

It's another one of these that would be disappointing simply because the lad seems a good 'un, he's played out of his skin on his only appearance and he's quite highly rated. That's all surface stuff though. You never know what's going on behind the scenes. He might want back to Holland, he might see that he's got no chance of getting a game here, like you say Forster might be more highly-rated now, we might see his injury proneness as a liability... There'll be reasons either way, but I obviously hope we're not selling him just to get some money in, as it goes against everything we've been told that we're trying to do here.

Can't risk the cost of helicopter fuel with the rumoured wage cut, tbh.
