Everton's defence always felt like a camel (to paraphrase an analogy from the Alchemist): it got older without gradual signs of aging and then just collapsed. If it had deterioriated over time it could have been remedied more easily. Going to be a tough season for them and Martinez's biggest test/criticism will need to be addressed: building a defence from scratch.

I feel the same "coming out of a stupor" sensation. Like a pall lifting.

Everyone who promised to get drunk on this day: deliver. That said, this feels like a war where any victory should not be celebrated. The cost of the victory is too great. The disconnection from the club I feel, I'm sure, is shared by many more, some of whom have jacked in supporting the club altogether. It's hope that there is something left to save I suppose.. if it happens, and Kinnear isn't appointed as replacement.

Their most recent spell in administration was 2010, promoted 2 years later....that's 2 seasons of premier league loot. Are they thinking its wiser to put together say a 10million package on a new manager (compo+salary) rather than spend a lot more than 10 million on new players in January? I would like to think it's cheaper than 10m, but their squad isn't abhorrent (by the league's standards). A good manager would go much further than 10m worth of players in today's market IMO. From their perspective, if they think Pardew is that manager then great for them/us.

Pardew has a contract of employment. Surely he can buy himself out with Palace's money up to the value of his remaining contract salary? So Ashley can't demand 12million or something absurd. Not sure if Palace are that flush though. As in, rich enough to buy his existing contract and pay him enough to make it worth his while to leave which would presumably require a lengthy contract too.
