I have liked Shelvey ever since the game when we beat them 2-0 at SJP the season before last. Sounds stupid but he really impressed me that day, a lot more than Liverpool's high profile players did. Think he'll make a good career out of himself. I think he's really underrated actually. People call him worse than shit but he's nowhere near as bad as people make him out to be and under Laudrup I think he'll do really well. Just anti-Liverpool bias clouding the judgement He'll do well. Keen to get forward, decent physically and technique isn't horrific.

Jonas is inj. Think it will be much tighter than people think. It's much better to play the good teams early doors. If you're a good side, that's probably true - like when Spurs got spanked off Man City and Man Utd in successive fixtures but then went on to build a great season anyway, but if your team is built on foundations of sand (as ours is), if you hit a slump early, you tend to stay in it for the season - as we did last year. Much prefer some confidence-boosters/early points on the board/momentum.

Excuses thread humour aside, Pardew's latest snippet seems to provide spoilers of our future in advance of the transfer window "slamming shut" and confirm the suspicion/fear regarding our January splurging this year - that it was not spending purely to rectify not investing adequately in the summer of 2012, but to cover the summer of 2013 investment too. Enough is being invested to keep us in the league and no more, I fear.

Proper bastard fixture to start the season with the more I think about it - would be good if the players could put the late-season humpings out of their mind, and start the season with a clean slate and bit more zeal, ambition and that - but starting against Citeh will just make this feel like a continuation from 2012/13!
