What a mess. Tottenham moving out of Tottenham and into a different quadrant of London while demolishing the stadium in order to build a new one would be unspeakably ridiculous. West Ham have a better claim but I still don't like it. My sympathies are with Orient, a decent little club about to get hammered by having a much bigger club start squatting on their doorstep. If they want the stadium, they should have it. If not, it should continue as an athletics venue and whatever else they can think of to do with it.

Oh, he turned up sometimes. He was certainly frustratingly inconsistent, but on his day he was one of the best players I ever saw in black and white. His unpredictability was thrilling and maddening in equal measure -- he'd do things that the opposition would never expect, but the rest of our side weren't expecting either. His talent only worked when the team adapted to him, and he wasn't very good at adapting to the team... which is why I remarked earlier that he was best when he was playing upfront alone and without responsibility to anyone else.

And nine European goals in 11 starts is a success.

I don't think you can really class him as either a success or a failure. There were some marvellous individual performances – vs Barça was one of the best I've ever seen in a black and white shirt – but he was as inconsistent as hell and never really clicked as a team player. Never connected well with Shearer, for example. He was best playing up front on his own, without any responsibility to anyone else. Loved the guy, though. Prodigious talent and a real character.

The BBC didn't report it as "nailed-on fact". Their story was all hearsay and "it seems" and "we understand" and so forth, and most of the quotes were from one of their own correspondents. It was a crap story, but it wasn't presented as fact. But as the first part of this thread shows, you can certainly fool some of the people most of the time.
