It's not the defense that's the problem it's the midfield! You've got to remember most of our backline needs at least a season to gel, so it doesn't help when your midfield keeps giving the ball away cheaply and looses possession 9 times out of 10, and which helps heap more pressure on the backline. I bet if our defence was at the back of Man U ,Liverpool and Chelsea's team they would look immense. Because the midfield is where every game is won and lost we need to address that issue first, before we can see an improvement! But we simply do not have the players yet to give us that. Roll on Jan

I think you're missing the main point that they're both as crap as eachother! Even when they have played in those positions, they have been piss poor without any quality deliveries apart from the odd one but certainly not consistent enough to really turn games. They should be shipped out in January and get someone decent in that can actually be effective.

Thing is we've tried that midfield so many times and it just gets turned over everytime. If we had a bit more steel and height in the middle we could rough it up a bit more. Viduka and Martins as a partnership just doesn't work for me, where Smith and Viduka would imo with Martins breaking in from a wide position.

I like the idea, but I'd have Martins and Smith starting up front, with Zog on the left and Milner right, and Faye/Butt and Emre/Barton in the middle. Zog needs to up his game a bit more for me, and as Martins is left footed I think he'd provide more of a threat than Zoggy at this moment in time. Lets look at Martins the first game of the season, he was out wide right then and we blitzed them the first half, but I think he'd be more effective down the left.

I'd like to see how chelsea's back line would cope with our midfield in front of them, probably ship as many goals. I think Sam's been clutching at straws with the lads in midfield and just has tried every combination possible with no positive outcome! It must be dawning on him now that they simply do not have the ability. So give Sam time people he's still got my backing and with the right signings in midfield in January we could be smiling come the end of the season.
