It could be argued that Keegan was ahead of his time in not wanting to play reserve games at St James'. Chris McMennemy said he scrapped the reserves because we were new to the Premiership and didn't have the players needed to run the reserves.
I'd hate to see Keegan fail after doing such a good job first time around but he loves the club and I'm sure this club does something to him that no other does. I'd rather go with Keegan than most of the names being mentioned because the whole ground would be lifting again to Keegan Wonderland and that could just be the spark that gets the players playing anything like potential.
I'd rather Keegan than Shearer, any day of the week.
Keegan has just been on Sky and said Newcastle was a club he loved and that he wouldn't rule himself in or out, if we go for him we'll get him if he's offered enough transfer money.
Sir John is quoted as supporting Shepherd's decision to sack Bobby. That suggests that he didn’t get involved in club decisions at that time, Shepherd has never challenged that either.
Would he get involved with hiring but not firing?
I sat amongst them in '99, they were shocking fans. I don't think I've ever heard a set of fans moan so much about a referee, they wanted every 50/50 to be given as a free-kick, it was horrible.
In your post above you mention about his history of being involved in these sort of confrontations (Bellamy v Souness) and in this one you say nobody told him to sell Bellamy and Robert. Can you see a connection between the two things you've mentioned and maybe that he was brought in to get rid of them? After all, Sir Bobby was sacked for the way the players were going on and Souness had a history of falling out with players and getting rid of them.
I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been added yet.

Edit, just seen the flag which is a better idea.
