Not as a "top target" but I've decided I'd definitely like JWP. What price do you think Southampton would want? 30m? If we can sign someone of higher calibre, to join our midfield, then JWP would be an excellent further addition to bolster our numbers. There's a few plus points: Really good character. Really good technician. Great set pieces. Leader. Can play anywhere in middle, DM, CM and AM. Probably wouldn't be on huge wages. Something about him that I think Howe would love. Proper good professional that fits our current team philosophy.

We were persistently told that Botman wanted to sign for Milan too. If Ashworth believes that Maddison wants to move elsewhere, he won't even move for him. You'd have to be blind or stupid to want a spurs move.

The issue with the super league wasn't about the elite teams playing in it but about it being a closed shop. The idea or reward/jeopardy is fundamental to our game.

2 things interested me in that interview... Firstly, he hinted at wanting to play in his favoured position. Presumably at number 8. Secondly, when asked about how long he will stay, he was rather non-committal. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it and hopefully he signs a new deal soon.

I prefer calling them cunts. Then everyone knows to whom I refer.

Because we need an AM and DM, McTominay is neither, therefore that's potentially 3 midfielders, plus other positions.

If we are looking at signing McTominay, I'd wager we are planning on doing ALOT of business this summer.

I don't want to sign McTominay either but worst case scenario is that he's a like for like with Longstaff. He's not creative enough to do the things that a Maddison type could and he's not good enough on the ball to play number 6 regularly. I do think he could do a similar job to Longstaff and Joelinton in the number 8 position, high energy, pressing, box to box etc. I've no doubt that Howe would improve him from a tactical and mental point of view. In short, I don't want him but he would strengthen our squad, just not our first team.
