  1. I am very excited, not for the player that Barnes is, but for the player he's going to become under EH. We have seen remarkable improvements in players many had already consigned to the NUFC bin pre-Howe. I cannot wait to see this lad with proper coaching reach his full potential.
  2. There's a couple who post on here that are ok but I think they're a strange bunch on the whole. Watching them interviewed on the Tyneside Life match day video last year, their indignance at losing to us was noticeable. As a club, they had a few interesting seasons in the 90s, but they did virtually nothing of note before 2016, then had a brilliant 5 years. Now they're a championship club which they've been for large swathes of their history. For some reason, they have a "but but we're a top club" vibe about their support.
  3. We were a bastard to play against last season, especially at St James'. The new signings will only make us more of a problem imo. We now have a really direct and aggressive goal threat in the wide left position and even more power and dynamism in the midfield. Tonali is honestly likely to prove streets better than Longstaff and I do love that lad, we missed him when he didn't play. These are two excellent signings, we're maneuvering around FFP really well I think.
  4. Match thread on Follow Follow was a decent read, plenty of praise for our performance and certain players. Seem a decent-ish bunch on there. They really don't like Anthony Gordon too much though "Anthony Gordon is a sleekit rat lady's front bottom" was one of the nicer descriptions, God knows what it means like
  5. Absolutely insane. I bought a 3000 sq ft house on close to an acre, granted not near the beach, last year for about 50 grand less than that. Can't get over the house prices over there now.
  6. In that specific era, 84-87, Liverpool had a dip and they were perfectly placed. For those 3 years they were something else, well balanced and relentless with brilliant strikers. I think Sharp is one of the most underrated strikers of the 80s.
  7. Living in the US since 98 but attending games between 82 and 98. I'd have to say the best visiting side off the top of my head would have to be Liverpool in 87/88. They beat us 4-1, Lawrenson in the twilight of his career barely broke sweat and we were honestly fortunate not to concede 8 or 9 that day. They were a fucking sensational side that season. On another note, one of the best performances by a team in any game I saw was also Liverpool in 1982 at Goodison. Beat Everton 5-0, had I think 2 maybe 3 goals disallowed, hit the woodwork 2-3 times, Hansen galloping forward playing 25 yards through balls. On a muddy shit pitch in an away derby game. Ridiculous.
  8. Mine hasn't seen Schar yet and I can almost hear her response so I intend to keep it that way Popey is an interesting shout like. Dummett I can see, as far as the local lads go at the club there's not much competition really, Paully D is local Hollywood.
  9. Watched it with my lass. She doesn't really follow it or know the players being American and all. Had her appraising the players for their good looks "Nah he's ugly" "What about Sven man? Bloke's an adonis" "Nah, got big ears" Callum Wilson saunters in, her jaw drops slightly "I'll give you that one"
  10. Dalglish was a weird one. I never understood his philosophy at all when he came to Newcastle. His Liverpool teams in the second half of the 80s, especially the 87/88 team, were fantastic free-flowing teams that scored at will. When he came to Newcastle, I pictured us playing like those teams, even though with hindsight, his Blackburn team were pragmatic to say the least. Just a standard 4-4-2, with good wingers and a brilliant front two, but that would have been great as well. He comes to us (granted it was 10 years later), sold all our best flair players and turned us into an ageing, miserable to watch outfit that could barely score a goal. You'd think that managing us for the second half of 96/97 with brilliant players that he inherited from Keegan and getting to second place would have given him some insight into taking us forward. Maybe some time between managing Blackburn and us, the game moved in a direction he couldn't understand or adapt to. Still one of the biggest disappointments of my supporting life.
  11. Thought we were a bit unlucky not to take 4 points off them last season, could have beaten them at home and certainly were better than them for large parts of the away game.
  12. Need to prove himself against Gateshead first
  13. Some of these comments are probably not far from the truth and it remains my only concern about him, potential for burnout. He's undoubtedly one of the finest, brightest and most adaptable coaches operating in world football but often comes across as borderline obsessive. This is great for NUFC in the short and medium-term but long-term, I worry about him burning out. Hard to imagine us without him and his staff.
  14. Just one example, that Leicester vs Everton game late in the season when Pickford saved Maddison's pen at 2-1. That goes in, Leicester go 3-1 up, likely win instead of it finishing 2-2 and Everton go down, finally.
  15. Lasted 90 seconds, nearly split me pants wide open
  16. Tripps man, the man who started it all
  17. Could only handle about 90 seconds of that video. I shouldn't have watched even that much
  18. Don't do it to yourselves
  19. That can't be right man. You can't recover from an ACL tear in 2 months, especially not back in the 80's or early 90s when that injury was even more serious than it is today. An MCL injury maybe.
  20. Pic 13, Ashworth looks like he wants to pile in for a group hug
  21. In his latest IG post, he states "Hey Magpies! Thank you for the warm welcome. Excited to start this next chapter of my career, with my new teammates. Can't wait to play at St James Park" He also posts a pic that where he looks at least as happy as the one holding the Scudetto imo. No longer worrying.
  22. From Wiki: In January 2014, Hoolahan was the subject of transfer speculation from Aston Villa who reportedly had a bid of £1 million rejected. A few days after this reported bid, Hoolahan put in a transfer request which was turned down by the club. On 7 March, Hoolahan scored the opening goal against Villa in a 4–1 defeat, and executed a muted celebration. Ghastly.
