Hello birdhunter, welcome. You have hit the nail on the head with your first post. Emre is our best creative midfielder by a distance yet our managers over his time here have never given him the confidence and role he deserves. He was played alongside Parker with Parker supposed to provide the creative spark, which was not going to work for obvious reasons. Paired with Butt we have played some of our best football, because in that system both central midfielders know what their responsibilties are and play to their strentgths. I don't understand why everybody here seems to agree Emre is not fit for a 442, because he has proved he is in his time here. I do have to agree though that Emre looks better coming from the bench than starting a match, which may be a fitness issue you'd expect Sam to sort out. If he moves back to Galatasaray in Jan I hope you do get the best out of him, but even moreso I hope we get in a more consistent replacement who can be our playmaker, because I'm sick of our defensively minded cecntral midfield that doesn't add anything going forward and doesn't actually seem very good at protecting the defense either going by goals conceeded..

So essentially Smith should be deployed up top because of his huge stamina and willingness to close people down? These qualities are very useful when the team is not in possession, but what does he contribute when we have the ball? Smith imho is a perfect symbol for everything that is not working in Allardyce's setup right now, i.e. graft before flair, defense before attack.. Edit: for what it's worth I though Smith was completely invisible today. I know some will say I'm not supposed to pass judgement on him played in midfield, but as Allardyce seems to insist on playing him there I cannot see the logic in this, because our manager clearly thinks of Smith as a midfield player and as our captain you would think Smith would have the bottle to speak up and tell Sam he isn't comfortable in that position if he wasn't.

We don't deserve to lose, but you have to wonder why we stopped playing football the last 15 minutes of the match. Certainly not Allardyce's intention considering his substitutions..
