The other side of the argument is whether they would be as good as they are if they had the playing careers of those given early opportunities. They're amongst the elite because of graft, insight and eagerness to adapt. Gerrard, Lamps, Rooney used they careers to leapfrog what should have been a lengthier process. Rooney wasn't prepared for even Derby level of management.

Defensively, Lampard has Everton in good standing (although they didn't look good against ManU). It's the other end of the pitch that they struggle. Granted, this could also be read as they're under constant pressure defensively and that their midfield sucks. Aye, Lampard wants to be a manager and a successful one, whereas Gerrard doesn't strike me as really wanting to work at it.

I have doubt Gerrard even wants to manage at the level that's required to get to Eddie's calibre. The perception, from my perspective, he gives off is that he's gone into management to stay close to Football and the spotlight post a very good career.

Lampard has more about him than Stevie G, but neither of them will be as accomplished as coaches as they were players. Howe strikes me as a relentless student of the game, but also possesses exceedingly good management skills with players, the press, etc.
