His confidence is coming back but it's still not totally there. In the previous game against Barcelona he sent over a really early ground pass for Barnes in the first half on the counter. It was a big chance well saved. More or less a carbon copy situation to that one last night which he hesitated on and crossed it straight to the goalie. A more assured player delivers it earlier, as he did in the first game.

He's not flawless but he's been extremely dependable this season. Constantly available and always at a very high level, the odd mistake notwithstanding. Honestly thought he was so good last night, such a pisser he essentially took the fall for those calamitous final few moments.

I share @TheBrownBottle's depression about the PL teams' resources compared to the rest of Europe, but Barcelona are nevertheless absolute giants on this stage. They are generally a last 8 team in this tournament and should've been finalists last year. We can definitely consider ourselves massive underdogs in the context of the Champions League and view results moreso through that lens, than the "yeah but PL resources" lens.

I do believe in the lad and I'm desperate for it to work for him. Funny game tonight; thought he terrified the full-back just as he did against Man Utd, but it was incredibly telling that Murphy came on and delivered an inch perfect cross for a goal. He just needs to keep improving; this can't be his upper limit.

It was an error but nothing heinous and - as has been the case so much this season - the inability to convert chances is far more accountable to not getting the result. He was absolutely brilliant prior to that and I'm gutted for him that the moment fell to him.

Might be copium but I do kinda buy it. To have beaten them on the night would have been wonderful and memorable but I don't think I'd have had that much confidence going into the second leg. We're shite at backs-to-the-wall like you say.

Agree entirely. 1-0 never likely to be enough over there and we had them on the ropes. That wasn't the issue as you say. Completely shit the bed in that last passage of play + terrible ref gone over the four minutes.

The outcome speaks for itself and we should've had more composure in those final few minutes, but I do understand why we went for it. Always felt like we'd need more than a goal lead to get through the tie. Absolute sickener, just utterly gutting.

Thiaw was mint all game, no beef with him, we let them come into us. We had the four minutes though.
