Ultimate 'if you don't buy a ticket' goal
-
Looks like everything we're missing in the current forward line, notwithstanding Gordon's uptick in that position. So positive and powerful; everything you want Woltemade to be but isn't.
-
Definitely enthused by those compilations of Delap just randomly going around decking people with wanton radgieness. A few after school sessions with Professor Linton and we'll have that aggression well refined.
-
Tbf he's not proven quality so should be okay.

This isn't true though. If 8th gets Europe then worst case scenario we're four points off that position with *triple checks* 21 points to play for. Having the mackems do the double over us would be an immense failure and borderline shameful, no two ways about it, but it wouldn't end the season.

I don't really care about Man Utd's status based on their history; we have been, at worst, on a par with them since the takeover. We've finished above each other twice each; we've had more CL games, we've beaten them more times in the league, they've got one more pot than us (thanks to winning a final we also played in). Meanwhile they're a shit basket case club with crumbling infrastructure and a well-ingrained toxic underbelly, and as responsible as anyone for the anti-competitive environment the rest of us inhabit. Of all the cartel clubs, they're probably the ones I'd be most mortified seeing any of our icons turning out for.

Could easily just be my own sensibilities but I find 'embarrassing' unduly loaded as a word cos it feels equal to shameful or if the team has done something heinous. I've been embarrassed by the club plenty of times in my life but it just doesn't happen these days. It doesn't feel like any of the current representatives really deserve it. Humbling feels more appropriate, but appreciate this is probably just me snuffing copium.

I think Howe probably didn't cover himself in glory last night and could've made some tactical choices that might have protected the players a bit in that second half. The fourth goal opened the floodgates so if that doesn't happen, it's a different story. We were destined to lose but not necessarily destined to get utterly annihilated. And you could say he probably should've gone damage limitation sooner. On the flip side, he's manufactured a team that matched Barcelona for three out of four halves, as everyone's said, and it's not a coincidence that the last of those halves is where it fell to pieces. The players are absolutely spent and it's a miracle they've been delivering their recent levels.

If there was ever a moment which summed up one of the biggest head losses I've seen from a Newcastle team in years and years, it was that. Absolutely ludicrous mistake and I'm happy to believe it was no true reflection of the player. Our worst midfielders ever never just played it across the box to an unmarked attacker. Just a mad moment; hopefully he forgets it immediately because he's been cracking recently and was really good last night before the whole team received their half-time teamtalk from the brain sucking alien from Starship Troopers.

I keep reading this but is there any actual evidence for it? My question isn't intended as a disagreement. What does 'hurt us for a long time' mean? ~£140m if we finish in the top half; ~£56m for CL exploits; ~£150m from incoming transfer fees... surely that's going to absorb some of the impact of the Wissa transfer not recovering? All of the other signings are contributing to some extent though Elanga was obviously very expensive.

If Tino goes, we'll have zero right-backs in the squad because Krafth's contract won't get renewed as he's so injury prone. It's not ideal but it might be a pragmatic choice we're forced to make, especially given the turnover we might be looking at elsewhere in the squad. And if there is a high turnover, it could be useful to have the likes of him in the building to keep standards. Well he was absolutely exceptional only a couple of games ago against Man Utd. Not trying to pretend he isn't at the end of his career; clearly he is. But this sort of thing always gets said when we lose; the reality is, as far as backup full-backs go, he's pretty dependable but with significant limitations. We owe him a lot even this season given what a sicknote Tino has been.
-
You haven't really said why beyond just that it feels different It's been done to death but the key points, distilled are: the stakes are lower because the chances of getting knocked out are so low; the amount of games causes immense toll on everyone but those with the biggest squads.

Enjoyed my Liverpool supporting Father in law telling me not to worry about Newcastle's collapse because Liverpool would do it too. They have it so rough like.

Fair enough. I couldn't agree less , but fair enough. I think this format has had absolutely massive implications on our whole season, let alone the 'feel' of the games themselves from the fan perspective.
-
You don't think the format had any bearing on our respective experiences?
-
I don't follow. Two European adventures? Which two?

Just feels very "Yay we made PAR." The last one was so much more memorable imo and we came rock bottom of our group. It was agonising, on a knife edge the whole time and had that PSG night. Don't get me wrong, I've looked forward to every game on the day, and winning games is always nice - of course it is. That Benfica game a thousand years ago was probably the stand-out of all the wins but they were a pretty shit team. It's just had the vibe all along that it was going to be a trudge through ten medium-stakes games before we inevitably got dumped out at the first knockout stage. And that's exactly what happened. I assume it'll have done good stuff for us financially but as a sporting memory it doesn't compare to all our previous goes.
-
I don't think you're in the minority I'd hope not. The only thing it has on the previous format is the fresh opportunities for the nutters who give everything to follow us absolutely everywhere.
-
It's a garbage tournament and the most memorable thing from our entry in it this season is the manner of which we went out. Pales in comparison to all of our other previous exits which all at least had some epic night. This campaign the wins were routine and exhibition-like meanwhile the schedule was hideously bloated. This isn't bitterness at going out incidentally. Been saying it all season.
-
Think their late equaliser last week had more significance than I gave it credit for at the time. Didn't think it would make a lot of difference, and numbers-wise it didn't, but psychologically it was immense. Barcelona knew from that moment that we weren't capable of winning that tie and they played with supreme confidence from beginning to end tonight.
-
Not sure where to start. Perfect storm of the opposition turning it on, us making loads of mistakes and the tiredness kicking in. Ergo ten minutes of the worst punishment I can recall seeing us receiving in years and years, and suddenly out of nowhere it's a total humiliation. Would love to think everyone won't be hideous towards the Newcastle combatants but I won't hold my breath. Aye we fucked it but they're not cunts etc.

Blew the whistle at 90 thank Christ.

The head loss after the fourth is what did it. Levels dropped, heads went, and sadly it all happened while we were playing away to the deadliest home side in Europe. Our arse was presented to be torn and they did. It's such a shame it's ended like this but I genuinely don't think there's anything truly shameful here. They've just taken maximum punishment for dropping their levels.

There's so long to go.
