I second : The Ball Is Round (David Goldblatt) as well as Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life (Alex Bellos) -tells the story of Brazil, Brazilian football, the Seleção but not just the famous footballers but charts the players that have been sent over to the likes of the Faroe Islands to play their trade of all places

Left backs are in the side foremost to defend and Domi wasn't very good at it. Plus his attitude knocks points off for me , certainly rather have Bez in the trenches beside me than Domi, who we all know what unforgivable thing that he did. I didn't think that Bez was all that good defensively either tbh, the only proper defender we had in the premier under Keegan was probably Peacock. Barton, Bersford and Albert were more about being good on the ball, although Venison was probably better in both respects even though he got bombed out by Keegan for indiscipline before Barton arrived. What's this? I didn't know about that. I remember thinking Peacock was s*** when I was a kid. I think I need to go back and rewatch some matches because it was probably because he was an out-and-out defender. Howey was a good defender as well tbh, he just seemed to be constantly injured. Peacock was a decent defender, nowt special but could do a job......yeah he did get the blame at times but what would you expect when Albert, Beresford and Barton bombing up the the pitch with only him left at the back to try and stem the tide

Football's greatest - where does Lionel Messi rank?
LooneyToonArmy replied to Dave's topic in Football
The true face of Messi? Lionel Messi has had his conduct questioned after quotes published by Spanish site El Confidencial suggested that the Argentine insults and bullies his team-mates. Widely regarded as the world’s best footballer, Messi has been accused in the past of not being the ideal team man, and the latest quotes - if accurate - could indicate that the Argentine struggles to control his anger towards other players at the club. The story - headlined "the true face of Messi" - was allegedly filtered out via Spain U19 stars Alejandro Grimaldo and Gerard Deulofeu, and claims that the unrest in the Barcelona dressing room has been kept firmly under wraps previously due to a Mafia-style 'omerta' – a law of silence. Messi's "favourite victim at the moment" is said to be Spanish 22-year-old Cristian Tello, to whom Messi has apparently delivered such gems as "What are you doing? You're new here, and you're nobody!" and "Pass me the ball, you're here to play for me." Tello was allegedly left in tears after these exchanges, a situation which the report claims was made even worse by the fact that the other players in the changing room blanked him even when he broke into the first team. Messi is also reported to have attacked Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez, who signed from Udinese for 37 million euros in 2011, saying, "Considering how bad you are, I've no idea how you cost so much," and, "Stop shooting so much and give me the ball." The story remains firmly in the ‘unconfirmed’ bracket, and even if Messi did use the language in question it's certainly easy enough to imagine that he did so with tongue firmly in cheek, in the spirit of training ground banter. But Eurosport Spain’s journalist Jorge Ordas says it’s not unusual for such reports to emerge regarding Messi's standing within the squad. "Well, it’s not the first time that it has been said Messi that is not a good team-mate," Ordas said. "He had some troubles with David Villa last year and he probably has a special personality. "But honestly, I can’t imagine Leo Messi saying that to other players – that is just my opinion." -

Alan Pardew has revealed he faces some tough decisions to make this season regarding Moussa Sissoko – but the Newcastle United boss insists the powerful Toon star is an indispensable figure in his first team. The 23-year-old United midfielder began his career on Tyneside like a house on fire with a two-goal blast on his home debut against Chelsea. But, perhaps understandably and amid a poor run by the team, Sissoko’s form dipped in a tough second part of the campaign. The former Toulouse ace’s preferred position is as a box-to- box midfielder, but Pardew knows that he would have to axe either Cheick Tiote or Yohan Cabaye to make that happen. Pardew will experiment in pre- season with his team and could field Sissoko in the No 10 role or out wide. The United chief told the Chronicle: “You could argue that Moussa Sissoko needs to define a position for him. He needs to find a position and he needs to be in the first team. “If he is going to play behind the striker then he needs a few more goals. “If he is going to play through the middle, then who comes out? “Is it going to be Cheick Tiote or Yohan Cabaye? “Or is he going to play on the side where he played for France and Toulouse?” Sissoko missed the last three games of United’s campaign with a knee injury. Yet he returned to pre-season training fully fit and raring to go last week and is clearly on a mission to shine this season. United’s backroom team are delighted with his contributions and are confident that, with a full pre-season under his belt and signs of a big improvement in mastering the English language, Sissoko can be a real star for the club next term. Wherever he plays Pardew knows he will be a real asset for the Magpies, who are looking to improve on last season’s 16th place finish. Pardew said: “He is an important factor in this team. “His position evolves in our team. “I think he is a terrific player and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him.” http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/moussa-sissoko-key-newcastle-united-5071840?

South American Football - Referee beheaded by fans for killing player There were absolutely horrific scenes at an amateur football match in Brazil when spectators lynched a referee and put his head on a stake after he had killed a player. The barely believable incident happened in Maranhao, Brazil, last Sunday. According to reports in Brazil, referee Otavio Jordao da Silva (20) fatally stabbed footballer Josenir dos Santos Abreu (30) during a heated moment of a match. Santos Abreu is believed to have argued and then struck the referee after being unhappy with a decision. It is believed the referee was carrying a knife throughout the match and fatally stabbed the player in retaliation. Santos Abreu was rushed to hospital but died from injuries on the way. Outraged by the incident, some spectators then apparently decided to inflict a gruesome revenge on the referee. According to reports, the referee was tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered. They then put his head on a stake and planted it in the middle of the pitch. One man, Luiz Moraes de Souza, 27, has been arrested over the incident. He has admitted to assaulting the referee but denied killing the man. Police are searching for two more suspects. They are currently viewing video footage of the incident filmed by a witness with a mobile phone. In a statement, the regional delegate of Santa Ines, Valter Costa, who is looking after the case, said: "One crime never justifies another crime. Actions likes this do not collaborate with the legality of state law."

Is there not a limit for the number of loan players you can have? Or are they permanent signings from Udinese?
