Think they'll try Queerarse first.

Some sense at last. People wanting Crouch have been abducted by tall thin aliens and anally probed and seem hypnotically attracted to him.
-
Have fucking Crouch then. But don't come back on here at Christmas whining. [wink/]

Agreed. x2 x3 Why? Ridiculous just quoting Dave's preference. Why don't you want him? Wages? Style of play? Why do you think he will not fit in with Owen and Martins up front? Does he not score enough goals? Is £8m too expensive? No Pace. Can't drift deep. No tricks. One dimensional. Don't want to pay silly money. Don't want to give Liverpool a way of ditching their 4th choice striker. £8m is hardly silly money for a guy who's proved he can be a real handful against some of the best defenses in the Premiership. Hopefully Pompey will get him........

Don't want to give Liverpool a way of ditching their 4th choice striker. dunno mate. He scores goals, leads the line, good in the air and certainly better with the ball at his feet than many people think. Its not silly money, the price is probably about right, bearing in mind a 4 year contract taking him to 31 would depreciate his value, but hopefully we would get 4 good years. Not saying there aren't better, but look at it another way, if we get half that for Ameobi from Stoke, we are laughing. Maybe he shouldn't be Liverpools 4th choice striker behind Voronin ? And its hardly a disgrace to be behind a player like Torres in the pecking order ? And 'running through jelly' Kuyt and now Babel as well. The wages would be massive as well.

I think Michael "The Midget" Owen is better with his head tbh. Owen is a case in point. We really want fast mobile strikers who can rotate deep, have plenty of movement off the ball and can take a hand in creating. Crouch isn't really that player. He is an antique...THe modern game has passed this kind of player by.

If he's that good why are 'shiteholes like Portsmouth' his best option? that's what i'd like to know Get real pls. As stated in my previous posts, Pompey is obviously a better proposition. If we are to compete for players with the likes of Spurs and Pompey, we will lose out as we are a lesser club. We are only big because of our crowd. It also these statements saying Portsmouth are shiteholes that make us butt of jokes for our constant delusion that we are great. Sad but true..but have accepted this fact long time ago. Btw, as revealed in an interview Utaka in France, he rejected us even though we offer higher wages cos he wants regular football but he did add, Portsmouth is a rising club while us yes he did say specifically in French, that we are a club going nowhere. i see what you're saying, but you're not 100% correct - it would surprise me if any player chose pompey ahead of us in a one on one fight for him, only thing i could see swinging it would be some type of affiliation with redknapp or the geographical location (in Dunne's case maybe a hatred of Barton) many NUFC fans (IMO) know that our club can ignite very quickly (perhaps like no other in the PL although that's arguable) and overtake these other clubs like pompey to challenge the top four if we get it right my issue with that viewpoint isn't that it's wrong but more that the likelihood of us getting it THAT right THAT fast is very slim, very slim indeed...i think there are going to be some very disappointed NUFC fans after the summer and next season, there's simply too much to do at the moment but to say pompey is a better proposition than us is a joke really They are in Europe, that in its self can be enough for some players if a player is short sighted enough to choose a club in europe for the first time in 'X' amount of years (ever?) over newcastle who've been in it a lot for the past decade plus and have won a european trophy then we're better off without them surely? For the peaking players, it is understandable that they are short-sighted especially for a Prem league veteran like Dunne who can see we are not going to be a Pompey (in terms of Europe & silverware, stability, ambition, more quality players) in the next 3-5 years. Not saying that we cannot reach that standard but it takes time especially our huge spending days are over as well as difficulties in attracting good players. So i put my head, unless we are the only one interested in him, he is going to Spurs and Pompey, clubs that can achieve something in the short term rather than in a steadying-progress-ship like us. run it by me again why spurs who finished just above us in the league and we have beat on the last 5 occasions are that far ahead of us ? Duh!!! my god, this statement is being short-sighted. You realise most Spurs fans have lost faith with Comolli and his weird buying sprees??

http://www.eurofound.europa.eu/areas/industrialrelations/dictionary/definitions/freemovementofworkers.htm Not hogwash at all. The EU was perfectly happy for many member states to effectively ditch that principle (for a time at least) when some of the new Eastern European nations joined and it became an inconvenience to allow their citizens full movement and employment rights. In this respect Blatter is perfectly correct, laws can be changed. The only question is wether the EU is prepared to change them or not. At the moment it seems as though not but who knows what 'arrangements' might be worked out over the next few years. Not the same thing at all. The new members joined the EU under the 2003 Treaty of Accession and that was where the provisions for temporally restricting the movement of their citizens was agreed, when they signed up to that treaty, they agreed to those restrictions. They are only temporary restrictions agreed out of political expediency in order to make enlargement a smoother process. No such agreement exists relating to the existing member states. The only way for something similar to be arranged relating to the citizens of the existing member states, would be for a similar treaty to be signed by them. This is simply not going to happen. To draw up a whole treaty for the "benefit" of a handful of EU citizens would be a ridiculous waste of time and money and would almost certainly never be agreed by the member states anyway. For a start it goes against the founding principles of the EU and secondly it would be challenged in the European Court of Human Rights and probably be defeated anyway. Why would they do that simply because Sepp Blatter wants them to!?! There's a big difference between adding something like this, as a small part of the terms of a treaty representing the introduction of an important and massive change, and going back and retrospectively rewriting the existing rules of the EU. Blatter's right; laws can be changed, but if he thinks that he's got any chance of the world's biggest economy; representing, 27 nations and 500 million people, changing one its absolutely fundamental and founding principles, simply because he stamps his foot and demands it, he's seriously mentally ill!! 'the World's biggest economy'...you need a reality check son ! The EU is one of the most regulation-bound economies in the civilised world - China & India are already peeing all over your so-called economic powerhouse and their dominance will continue to grow, not to mention that a Recession-hit USA is STILL the world's largest economy. You have been listening to far too much propaganda from your teachers(either that or you are a LIb-Dem MP..!!) I could reel you off a list of reasons why the EU will collapse within 20 years - only Germany has a strong economy of the major nations and they are already regretting ditching the DM in favour of the Euro because they are limited by the weaker economies of nations also in it ; the two nations with the best level of prosperity in Europe are Switzerland and Norway, neither of whom are members... As I have said before, this is a footie site, so I'll leave it at that - don't even get me started about resources - even Germany is dependent on the goodwill of Russia for her gas...France is amost 90% nuclear(I bet the Greenies love that !)and the UK is now an IMPORTER of oil & Gas... Here in Oz, we have enough Gas for hundreds of years, Iron Ore going to China by the thousands of tonnes, new oil being discovered and a cpuntry almost as big as the USA with 22m people - do the math and tell me who has got the brighter future..why do you think the FIFA conference was held in Sydney this week....!! Australia will be nuked if it plays up. FACT

I'm beginning to think I'm asleep and this is all a dream.
-
This is what happened. The player had very little to do with the transfer and I still believe there are strings attached to this deal.
-
Can't say I'm too bothered personally. You've got to be realistic. Save a truck load in wages as well.
-
We need to see where you're getting this from James.

Good post. Sometimes a strong youth policy is the only way many clubs can compete.
-
Agree with all of that and specifically the last bit. Clubs having a strong English youth policy from which they can benefit in real terms ie cash later or performances is one way of trying to even out the ridiculous short sighted nature of the game we currently witness. It's also about protecting the integrity of the beautiful game....So there!!

The thing is Neef we have a progressive development philosophy in place now and you're going to have to live with that.
-
I think correct incentives/protection needs to be put in place to support clubs developing young English talent. Your player should have to give something back to Watford and not just a mini-transfer fee or whatever these young players attract. The developing club should have the legal framework to be able to keep the player till they are 19/20, in this way they get some service back and a more realistic fee at that age. Same happens with apprenticeships in all other lines of work an' all, doesn't it? Nature of the beast and all that, I'm afraid. I'm sorry that isn't good enough. Clubs that develop young English talent need to be incentivised and we need to find ways to do this. The way big clubs hoover up young talent from around Europe isn't helping the English game either. Watford and Palace are a case in point where they both have good histories of bringing through English players.

shouldn't that read "be made to keep them"?? don't think anyone's forcing palace to sell are they? agree with the sentiment though, if a kid signs pro terms with a club they should be locked in for a certain period even if the club WANT to sell...though it'd have to be a football wide agreement rather than a law as it'd be totally illegal and considering it wouldn't benefit man u etc.... then forget it eh? Simon Jordan and Warnock have offered Bostock a deal that breaks their wage structure to try and keep him. so he's presumably not signed terms beyond his current contract in that case? spurs can't buy him if he's under contract and CP don't want to sell so he must be out of contract or whatever... iirc they aren't allowed to sign proper contracts till they are 16. Of course this is when bigger clubs nip in. Background: "Simon Jordan, Crystal Palace's chairman, has expressed dismay at the manner of John Bostock's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, calling the midfielder's stepfather a "liar" who is only motivated by money. There was confusion yesterday when Tottenham announced that the 16-year-old prodigy, rated as one of the hottest young talents in the country, had "reached agreement" to join them, only for Palace, the club at which Bostock has been schooled since the age of seven, to deny the claim and insist that they still held his registration. The Championship club will not relinquish that registration until they have been adequately compensated and, although they would prefer to reach a settlement with Tottenham, they are prepared to take the case to tribunal. "I don't know why Tottenham want to play silly buggers and put out such an antagonistic statement but that's why we responded," said Jordan. His gripe, however, is not with Spurs, it is with Mick Brown, Bostock's stepfather. Palace had offered Bostock a professional contract which would have shattered their pay structure for young players and the manager, Neil Warnock, who is known not to favour inexperienced players, was preparing to build a team around him. Warnock even held off signing a new midfielder, believed to be from Australia, because he did not want to put obstacles between Bostock and the first team. Jordan said he had been given assurances that the player, who became the youngest to represent Palace when he came on as a second-half substitute against Watford last October, would sign the contract. Yet Brown decided to part company with the agent Colin Gordon, who had negotiated the deal with Palace, and began to tout Bostock about other clubs. Chelsea and Arsenal believed that they had a deal for him but it was Tottenham who trumped them."

I think it needs to stop. Players fathers/agents/bloke in pub quickly turn a players head and then he/they starts saying he's unhappy etc What are Palace going to get for nearly 10 years of sticking by a young English player? I would like to see something in place that protects clubs who develop players.
-
...should be allowed to keep him till he's 18. It might even be considered that in the case of players like John Bostock (16) who Palace have invested in since he was 7 shouldn't be allowed to be hoovered up by the highest bidder till he's 21. Teams need to be protected when they invest in young English players and get something back from all that time and energy whether it be the services of the player for a few years or the more realistic transfer fee which comes from a 20/21 year old rather than a 16 yr old. Spurs the culprits.

I'll admit that you were right when september comes and we haven't signed enough players but until then I see no reason to panic. But I might change my mind if we still haven't signed anyone with 2-3 weeks left of the window. Its got to be the right players as well though. Last season showing signing anyone doesn't always work (Viduka, Geremi, Barton, Cacapa, Rozy & Smith) PS: I don't want you to admit i'm right even if i am (god forbid) just i've been here before, had the same s*** levelled at me and its turned out s**** like it always has done for years. TT, I agree with you general sentiments here. The overeaction of some is a bit OTT IYAM. You clearly are not in a state of panic but are a little concerned that nothing has happened yet and that the club appear to be dragging their heals a bit. If we had a history of fantastic summer transfer windows, then fine lets put up our feet, relax and let the window unfold. But unfortunately our record is quite frankly shit, the last truely great summer was over 10 years ago when we had got Ferdinand/Ginola. There we got in the bulk of our signings early on and then were in a postion to add icing on the cake late in the window by bringing in Ginola. The Belamy/Robert window was good too but that was through look more than design, I don't even think SBR could have predicted how good Belamy was going to be after his debacle at Coventry and we all know Robert was not his first choice at LW. Becasue of our history, we really need to try something new to make sure we don't end up with highly expensive dross. Planning ahead well before the season ends is one way to do that. Despite what Dave said previously in this thread, you are allow to negoiate with clubs and players (with the club's permission) outside of the window and hopefully that's what we are doing, there's just no evidence of it though, unlike Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs who have already locked up major signings. The thing is people will say nothing will happen now as it's too early, when the Euros start, they'll say nothing will happen now because of the Euros. Then when they are over, all the players will be on their holidays, so nothing can happen then !! That gives you late July and early August to land your players, by then of course they've missed the bulk of preseason with you and possibly the start of the new campaign. Bottom line is, we have previous, so I can understand people's frustrations, even at this very early stage of the closed season.
