i wouldn't even say 2 attacking central midfielders but 2 who'll get forward and defend a bit and will hopefully mix it up to make it difficuilt to mark them.
Sod the "we need one DM and one AM"-attitude.
Smith started the season superbly, but has gone backwards as the season's progressed. He did look like that energetic, hard battling DM he is supposed to be at first, but has now gone back to just throwing himself recklessly into challenges IMO.
He's a cracking impact sub tbh, being able to get him on when defenders are tiring is lethal. Can you really blame Hughton for going with the same team that were 3-0 up after 15 minutes and ended up winning 5-1?
Well, it's a pre-season tournament, so I'm assuming they'll play the best they can, but it's still only friendlies. League over here starts in just over a month fwiw, so that's where the Swedish teams should be at fitness wise.
I say trust Rooneys abilities and play 4-5-1. There are more goals in our midfield than in Heskey, and like you say, todays Rooney don't need a Heskey (though to be honest, I'm not sure he ever did).
I'd line up something like
Green
Johnson Ferdinand Terry Cole
Carrick Lampard
Lennon Gerrard Cole
Rooney
If J. Cole and Gerrard finds some form in the months leading up to the WC.
