There's already a poll in the AC thread but I'd be interested to know, what with the constant speculation, what you would consider a fair price, if any, for the big lad. Also, it'll be interesting to re-visit this as the season (and he) progresses to see if attitudes change. For the purposes of the poll you can consider the + player(s) element to mean a player, or players, who would add depth to the squad but not necessarily be star names/world beaters (examples being Keane, Larsson, Bentley, SWP etc etc). They would likely get in the first team, not let anybody down but we would be unlikely to ship them on at a profit. Me - I'd hate to see him leave but £30m is a load of money and I think if he's 'found out' next season which results in lesser performances/interest we may look back and wish we'd taken the big money whilst there was interest (Dyer being an example of this - significant interest from Man Utd when playing well, he then went on to enjoy a career of injuries and mediocrity in the main).

Too right. I'd be inclined to do that just for the fear factor on their part.

Most important first 20 minutes of the season. Nothing stupid, no rash tackles and set our stall out to maintain possession and frustrate them into fouls. They'll come out all guns blazing so the last thing we need is to concede early. The longer the game goes goalless, the longer our fans will wind theirs up and the bigger potential to nick something. Can't speak about the specifics of his contract, but don't get me and my original comment wrong, I'm open-minded about what reasonable would be. I'm just concerned that they'll ask him to take Division 2 standard wages and start slandering him to journalists if he doesn't accept it and say thank you. Yep - wouldn't surprise me but Barton must realise he still owes the club 2 years wages so there has to be a relatively 'do-able' middle ground if both parties are sensible. The worry for me would be Barton realising how well he's playing, how much interest there would be in him and thus trying to screw the club for one last payday knowing he's get it elsewhere if they didn't play ball, which they wouldn't. His cunt of an agent doesn't reassure me either.

I think one of the things to be said is that most people wouldn't give a shit either way if otherwise he was a decent manager. If in the long term he does well this will be forgotten about, but in the mean time there's about as much reason to be sceptical about him as there was Souness, Roeder, Allardyce and Kinnear. So unless he talks well, and he really doesn't talk well, then he should keep quiet. As it is, it isn't just the sound of his voice on me that I'm concerned about but its effect on the players. I could see him at Blackburn actually. Obviously money over ambition/job satisfaction. No problem with that as long as his Agent is honest about it. He's clearly been hawked around a few clubs, tested the market and he's opted for the biggest payer because on every other level footballer would choose to ply his trade at NUFC rather than at Blackburn.
