Exactly what kind of striker is Beattie apart from crap? Why bother with him? The money would be better spent on someone like Nugent He gets a lot of stick does Beattie but I think he would do a job with Martins/Owen because of his strength and running off the ball (taking players with him). I fully expected to get some shit for saying I'd buy him but I think he'd add something to our squad, especially with Sib being a year older and less mobile next year. I think he'd fit right into the squad and the area, he's english, he's not got a bad injury record and he's still young (ish). A sound investment in my eyes. Ok, he may not be the worst signing ever but for that kind of money (£4million-ish) we could buy a far better striker. Ok, on the basis Nugent has been quoted as costing over £4m (and isn't proven in the premier league) who would you suggest? Not being arsey BTW, just think Beattie is a great bet if we could get him for that price. I see your point and Beattie wouldn't be that bad. I'd rather have someone like Collins John, Marlon King or Kevin Doyle though. The only one of those I'd remotely consider taking over Beattie would be Doyle and I doubt very much whether we would get him for under £4m. Remember what happened to Andy Johnson's value after his one-season wonder at Palace? I think they were talking £12m at one point. Collins John does have potential but feck me does he need a decent coach. Marlon King will take a long time to recover from his injury and he isn't proven in the premiership by any means (and probably won't be this season cos Watford will be down by the time he's fit). Any more suggestions? I've been thinking about this on the way home and can't really think of anyone who would be better value, IF we could pick Beattie up at £4m or thereabouts. No question I'd stick James Beattie in the squad if we could pick him up for about £4m. He's a different tpye of striker to the rest at the club (Martins = PACE, Owen = CLINICAL, Sibierski = HOLDER UPPER, Amoebi = SHITE). So he could complement any of them really, perhaps not Sib. He's had a poor time at Everton but they don't really play to his strengths and he's always done well when I've seen him at St James' so he would be my first buy. Beattie = £4m Bridge = £4m Cicinho= £2m (Worth taking a chance on at this price) Jankulovski = £4m (Can cover either flank as a full back) Wes Brown = £3m (To partner Taylor at CB) Distin = £3m (To partner Taylor/Brown at CB) This little lot would make me feel far more optimistic about the good times coming back. I think we'd be well placed to challenge for a Top 5 spot with these additions. We could subsidise alot of these by sales too:- Bramble = £1m Carr = £1m Babayaro = £1m Luque = £4m That would pay for at least two of my suggestions.

I'd also start Sibbers with Martins to further develop their partnership and leave Dyer on the bench becuase he's the only person capable of really changing a game in the last 35 minutes if we need to chase the win AND he's hardly the most reliable person to play against a big, physical Watford side scrapping for points. Duff will start if fit. I agree with what your saying, but Emre, Duff and Sibbers will need easing back, whilst Parker and Dyer are raring to go. Its not a case of who would be best, its putting the fit players in and avoiding further injuring the player that are coming back, holding them back for the chelsea game certainly wont be a bad thing either. The way he has been playing id pick emre ahead of Parker, but we need to keep our players off the injury table until the end of January at least. Why would Emre, Duff and Sibbers need easing back and not Parker? Just because he hasn't played for a while doesn't mean he's less likely to get injured again. He's had the most serious injury out of all of them so I would have HE would need easing back?

There is a lot of football to be played by the time (even, IF) we play AZ not to mention a transfer window with a potentially full wallet for Glenn to empty so I wouldn't be making too many assumptions on this one. Also, no club will relish a trip a turkey.

Duff will start if fit. 2nd that not sure about that,bearing in mind how long duffs been out i reckon he'll go dyer on the right and milner left if sibbs is fit(ie no need for dter to play up front) You might be right - I would have thought he would want a naturallt left sided/footed player on the wing that was my theory. I suppose it depends on how fit Duff is.

I think the last person who played 4-3-3 got his P45. Fair point but I reckon Sib could do a job through the middle with Martins/Milner or Rossi running down the sides, creating things. It would NOT be pretty to watch or entertaining but it might be an effective way of picking up points when some of our more creative players are injured (Zog, Solano, Emre, Duff etc). Just a thought.

I used to have a season ticket in the lower tiers of the Milburn stand when we were shite under Jim Smith, Ardiles and Co - have to say I much preferred the craic and banter with other fans around when we stood AND you felt (and probably were) much closer to the action. I remember watching one match with an ageing Kevin Sheedy playing left wing, constantly getting beaten to the ball by their right back. Some fella next to me was harranging Sheedy from the first whistle of the second half right to the end of the game and, with about 3 minutes to go, Sheedy 'offered' him out. 'I'll feckin see ye outside yer fecking langer' - the Geordie didn't know where to put himself. Funny as owt. You don't get that interaction with the players anymore. Although, if Stevie Carr fancies a go, I'll meet him wherever he wants!!!!!!!!! He'll just have to get down to his fighting weight first, so I'll not bother checking my phone for a while! Anyway, back to the subject.................... Whilst I accept the safety argument regarding seating I think it would be nice to have one part of one stand which is 'standing only'. It'll never happen though. Not in a million years.

On the positive side it will more than likely rule him out of any January move. I doubt we would want to sell him (even though he's looked unhappy this season) but if Arsene and the rest of his 'froggy' chums come calling we might have been forced to flog him. He won't be passing any medicals in Jan now. In his absence, maybe we can change formation to 4-3-3 and play a narrow game whilst Duff is getting fit? It wouldn't be pretty but it might get us through some games with a point rather than nothing. Play Sibbers up top (if fit) through the middle to hold the ball up and lay it off to martins on the right and rossi on the left? What do you think?

Me too. Shame for Emre when he's just started to hit a run of form since joining. Although, with the commitment he shows, we've got to expect him to pick up minor injuries throughout the season. It would be a step back if (when fit again) Roeder chooses Parker/Carr over Emre & Solano who have made us look a far more creative outfit over the last few games, IMHO. Wait and see what happens.

SSN reckon Emre might only be out for 2 matches. The presenter mentioned it whilst showing our goals, about an hour ago. He also said Sib would be in contention for a place on Weds. No mention of Solano

Great call. Seem to remember Geremi having a great season for Boro a few years ago. Would be a massive improvement on Carr. Though, did he play in midfield for Boro? Can't remember now, but anything would be an improvement on the Fat Mong currently occupying our RB spot. I'd go as far as £10m for the pair personnally. Would improve our back four no end.
