was expecting krafth schar burn hall before the team was announced.

    and then our usual 433.

but couldnt really tell what the formation was when i started watching. all over the place.

It was the same setup as against Spurs.

Out of possession Krafth, Schar and Burn as a back three, Murphy and Anderson at wing back and Longstaff and Bruno in midfield. Barnes, Isak and Gordon forward three.

In possession more of a 4-3-3, with the front three staying the same, Anderson coming into midfield with Longstaff and Bruno and a back back four of Murphy, Krafth, Schar and Burn.

We were switching between the two depending on whether we were in or out of possession.

  2. Kudos to the new Palace manager. Seems they got a good one.

His 3-4-2-1 works well, and they are getting more and more comfortable playing it. He's getting the best out of their better players already too, and Mateta, who has always had some great physical tools, is now being unlocked in a better setup.

Eddie sticking with the Spurs setup to match their 3 at the back system was probably the right shout, however, we shouldn't have done so without actual wing backs. Murphy and Anderson dropping into those positions defensively didn't work going against a proper 3-4-2-1 and a manager who uses this tactic all the time and specializes in it.

They pressed the life out of us. Defence was not capable of getting the ball out of our half, very slow passing and turning.

Their front line looked dangerous every time they had the ball.

Their full backs werenso aggressive (clyne and muñoz).

They played better and we had no response

Always worried anytime we play a team that presses well this season and has a lot of energy in midfield.

Only Bruno can deal with it really. Longstaff is so depressingly poor in those situations and so we struggle to then really get going. Anderson is still going to have his ups and downs as a younger guy, so can't be too upset with him.

We miss having Joelinton's strength to hold off players and carry the ball in there so much. Willock's ball carrying also has been missed in there.

Just been a lot of managing through this issue so much of this season. It has sucked.

Or forgetting he was playing right wing that season.. Isak has been a talent for many years - the twitter analytics virgins are very boring when they evidently dont watch players play.

    Yeah, exactly.

They were playing a diamond type formation and he ended up in that right channel a lot, it was a different sort of role. Their build up play was also very slow and control based, so didn't get him into space much.

To be fair at the time we'd paid £60+million for a striker who'd scored 6 goals in 32 league games in the previous season. For comparison Nicholas Jackson has 10 in 29 this year. McTominay has 7 in 27.

Really glad our scouting was more refined and was able to see past that. Appears many others didn't. No context applied for the type of player he was, the team he was currently playing in and how his attributes would translate to the Premier League.

Hojlund is 3 years younger and already has more goals in his first season than Isak did.

Hold that L for sure man.

Oh man, the cope is real.

Unfortunately for you, getting older doesn't automatically mean improvement, especially at your club. Ask Martial.

Our strikers value has already doubled and even your fans are all over the place gagging for him, along with everyone else.

We'll soon see the mess you'll make of Hojlund, who you won't get your money back for right now. He's already looking worse each week from how he started.

    You are in the mud.

I didn't gloat. I said it was a huge fee for someone who scored 1 in 3 in La Liga. It was a huge fee. I stand by everything I said. Friendly reminder Martial had more goals and assists per 90 than Isak last season. Isak is clearly talented, but he's only managed to make the pitch for 50% of your minutes this season. Lets calm it down a little before acting like £65m was some sort of magic bargain.

Also, Casemiro was one of the most important players in getting us back into the Champions League and winning our first trophy in years. It was hardly a laughable signing.

    ;D ;D ;D

You can have your Carabao and busted flush Brazilian who the Coventry boys were skipping past for fun. I'll have Isak thanks.

What's especially funny about your proclamations about Isak, is that you then spent even more on Hojlund who has been more injured and had an even lesser goal record prior to signing for you.

    Hold that L man.

  8. Just a friendly reminder that @Froggygloated and mocked with his trademark emoji, when we paid £60 million for Isak. Citing an inability to score goals.

While at the same time celebrating the £60 million purchase of a Brazilian relic whose legs have expired within a year and who will now already need replacing.

More comedy moments to come this summer. Watch this space.

The prices paid for the players are why everyone were, and still are, overrating Chelsea. There's this perception that they have a bunch of premium players just because they chose to pay way too much for each of them. Their players are just not very good, and most of them were just overhyped. The price tag doesn't change how good a players is. If someone somehow chose to pay £100m for Almiron, he would still be Almiron. They do have a young squad though, that's the only reason why I don't want to write them off for next season. They are hard to predict.

I just don't understand how you send £100 million plus on a player that is performing at this level.

What were they seeing in the guy to justify that kind of outlay?! My God ...

They are young though, like you say, so let's see. Maybe things change. But watching Enzo I'm not sure he has the legs, physicality or the engine to keep up in midfield in the Prem. He is so invisible in there.

  10. Ashworth had barely got his feet under the table here and was supposed to be a big part of things, and Ratcliffe thinks they should be paying similar to what we paid Brighton?!

The high compensation serves two purposes. To penalize Man Utd for disrupting things for us, and to make things difficult for Ashworth so he can't just go swanning off to Man Utd so easily, the cheeky git.

I actually thought Man Utd might be on their way to getting their house in order with this Ratcliffe coming in initially, but this guy isn't a sharp guy. I think he's going to be a dunce and they'll soon turn on him.

He's def got more to his game than say Højlund. Least he runs the channels, gets involved. Man U fans calling Højlund Jack Swagger because he spends more time wrestling defenders than playing football.

Jackson is typically involved in a lot of Chelsea's best play, and never coasts through games, he is always everywhere.

He cannot under any circumstances be relied upon for goals at this stage of his development though. He is too erratic in those moments.

He causes a lot of problems though, and in a team with more clinical players would be even more valuable. It's just Palmer that does anything in the team though.

  12. I think Enzo Fernandez gets away with murder.

Never see his name mentioned during Chelsea games.

That man doesn't do anything and is so lightweight in midfield.

Bern a shocking signing for what they paid. Absolutely mental.

Have changed my opinion on Rice since he's moved to Arsenal. He's been fantastic every time I've seen him. Comfortable in every position he's played in at CM. Was everywhere tonight.

There was someone on here saying he has been ordinary this season and invisible in big games.

    I could not believe it.

  14. Giving Joelinton a new contract really set a good precedent.

Think it will give others more confidence to commit.

Really need to prioritise rewarding key players in the team when the time is right.

Looks like this Isak one is to not apply the reduction in wages due to no Champions League, which would be fair enough having performed at the level he has, and with the interest in him.

Good move getting ahead of things.

Indeed, pretty much everybody who was at that club when the loan was agreed has since left. Besides, if Kuol was as good as we hope he’d have made a first team berth at Volendam his own. I can see an argument for letting him stay at Newcastle in the U21’s or something, but to think he could have played a role in out first team is quite fanciful based on the evidence of competitive games he’s played since moving here from Australia.

I never said he would play a role in our first team!

I said he would get far more staying and training with the first team.

And if we had a bunch of injuries perhaps he could get game time. Or at least be on the bench to throw on for some minutes like we saw with some others this season.

Maybe he should have risen to the occasion in Scotland and Holland instead?

Well that's the problem. He's not their player. They're never going to have the same level of investment or commitment to the player.

If he's not going to play at these clubs then let him not play at Newcastle instead, and at least train against far better players and get better guidance and development.

Doesn't this go towards FFP though? I suggested in another thread you would spend heavily again in the summer, and other posters suggested you won't have much of a budget at all and that it will likely continue into subsequent windows.

There's being rich and ruthless and there's being stupid. I still think a deal will be done in and around the £10m mark once the summer window closes.

You actually think we're the ones being stupid about this? [emoji38]

We already have plans in place for our recruitment this summer, which the people at the club have shown they can handle already, and we are down to final interviews for a new DOF.

You lot are the ones in complete limbo still. And this Ratcliffe guy isn't coming across well. Seems a bit daft. And in that marathon interview he seems like he's panicking about people not being in place yet.

Think you're going to be in for a very dodgy summer.

If he (Bally21) or any other wants to express his/their opinion on the subject then let him do it. It doesn’t mean fear and dred. It gets talk about all over Europe so it’s not exactly a big deal if it gets talked about. Shitting the bed over it properly then yeah, it’s silly. I’m certain that Isak and Bruno will stay, but I’m not gonna waste any energy over other people talking about it in a relaxed way. It’s a forum after all. Both will be linked left right and centre so it’s not gonna be quiet about them. It happens when you have class players. I kind of see it in a positive way, as it means we’ve done well signing these. It’s natural, that it gets talked about..

Of course they are free to say how they feel.

I'm just surprised there is such a level of concern over players leaving.

This often isn't possible. especially as it's just a "loan".

Les Ferdinand spoke about this on the Overlap. Managers push for players all the time.

The best situation (for a loaning club) is to have "feeder clubs" or the multi-club model where there is control vertically. You will not get full buy-in any other way.

Second bolded - i think this is true throughout football. Another Overlap reference - Carragher spoke to that Liverpool's Edwards some time ago. Asked him about what's the key to a successful transfer policy. His response was to the reasoning of "having the right relationships with agents" [emoji38]

It's a poorly run club but I think that's the primary reason Barca have recently made Deco some type of Director. He was/is a football agent with A1 contacts across Portugal and Brazil. A large part of Madrid's recent success is picking up South Americans (Fede, Vini, Rodrygo etc.) and they have a particular guy (forget his name) who is plugged into that market with A1 relationships.

We are year 2/3 in this build. We have a long way to go to build the best loan system. City have their multi-club model. Roman bankrolled Vitesse on the low etc. This will take time.

Edit: There is also no planet Owners and leadership really want to do loans. Particularly of other clubs kids. They do it because it could get them some quality they would not otherwise have. Or to help with a short-term goal (survival, promotion etc.). If neither is on the cards, they won't want the player or to use him. Might as well use their own Lewis Miley.

Loved the Les Ferdinand Overlap. Was really interesting actually. Thought he came across so well too. It's a tough gig for sure, as an up and coming DOF. So much to balance.

I find the loan thing somewhat irritating tbh. I wish managers would just have more of a plan and more trust in bringing youngsters through, or at least giving them a chance without them having had to go on loan somewhere first.

Kuol would have been better off staying and getting some sessions of training with the first team, and with all the injuries we had, maybe he gets a chance and rises to the occasion like Miley did. If not the training would at least have been at a higher level than he has had, and in the exact system and style we play.

The fear and dread people have for this is just astonishing.

So many seemingly still can't handle having anything good at the club.

    Incredibly sad really.
