  1. All down to me switching from 406 to 106 on the telly. Both goals came when I switched.
  2. We don't have anyone better to come in, to be fair. We've only got Clark who stands out at this level. We've got a bloke on the bench who is better than Lascelles, and whose errors seem to be the only defensive ones the manager sees.
  3. We've won 5 out of 7 at home to Wigan in the league and never lost to them at SJP That's the point. How long have you been supporting Newcastle? Would you be less worried if we'd lost every game we'd played against Wigan at home? They'd be a bogey team then you only have to see mickthemagpie in the EU and politics thread, to see he's an olive short of a pizza .
  4. He's a good egg Killer, I used to see him in the 80s in Coventry in the Indian restaurant I did the door for. Very pleasant chap and of course idolised by the Coventry public. The last time I spoke to him, I'd acquired a ticket for Spurs vs Newcastle at WHL, but with my Spurs supporting mate in the home stand behind the benches. When he started warming up as sub, I called him and we had a chat as he was warming up and stretching. Asking me what the f*** was I doing in the home stand etc. Just a top bloke. He was warming up on the side of the pitch on his mobile? Called out to him I should have said. Mobiles then were like the ones Del Boy changed the channel away from the horse racing .

  6. Coventry City and Newcastle United legend flying in from America to join former Sky Blues at Wembley http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/sport/football/coventry-city-legend-flying-america-12816098#ICID=Android_CoventryTelegraphNewsApp_AppShare
  7. See this is where it's so subjective about what a big/successful club means etc. For example, Leicester city have won 2 league cups and 1 league title in the last 20 years. We may have better support, but Leicester have been a million times more successful than us in that time despite being below us in the table for 80/95% (don't know the exact stats) of that period. You can look at clubs like Luton and Watford and they too have won trophies in the past 30 years...we have been the UK's biggest underperformers EVER when you consider crowd sizes and financial turnover. Watford? Coventry City have but Watford have never won a major domestic trophy.

Part of me thinks he's only been selected because that poor wee fellow is there. Sad I know.

Best thing of ITV showing England games is without a doubt the opening credits and The Verve.
  11. Birtles really enjoying himself watching Sweden Belarus. Be should get Prozac to sponsor him.
  12. That's why I've repeatedly put in pretty much everyone post that assuming Rafa wants to keep him then I don't see the problem. IF we get promoted and IF we pursue Gray to reinforce the front line I don't think Gayle, Gray and Mitrovic would be terrible options to have in the Premier League. Mitro is behind Murphy in the pecking order mate. Gayle, Gray & Murphy. Who is Gray?
  13. The main differences between the 80s and now are: In them days there wasn't the saturation of football on the telly. One live game at best a week. Generally midweek highlights even for Internationals at times. It made going to the game an event. Two, the advent of flat pack and out of town stadia to replace ageing grounds. I'm a traditionalist. The likes of St James Park and the like piss all over the Riversides of this world. Too many decent stadia were ripped down. Atmosphere was a million times better. And three, the ability to stand. Clearly something had to be done after Hillsborough, but rather than put a blanket ban on standing, the Government of the day should have gone to town on the policing of that event. We know why they didn't but the game of football lost out because of it. It is the major reason these flat pack shit stadia came to be in the first place. The hooliganism, as bad as it was, was something that you knew how to keep away from if you so wanted. The racism however wasn't. Black players got shocking abuse from certain clubs supporters on a regular basis. Our own supporters indeed were culprits in this.

Thought we played better in the 3-2 last year. That game we ended strong but I thought overall we played as good if not better for the full 90mins tonight. Of course Rooney will return and spoil it Nice to see a bit of flexibility too
  15. Somewhat inclined to agree based purely on the people I've spoken to - not being alive for most of the 80s myself. My cousin for example told me it was horrific following Bolton in the 80s. The racism was s**** too, and more unceasing than occasional. I don't think that's what Incognito was driving at mind you. He was just saying if you take away that horrible element, football was better then. He wasn't seeking to trivialise it I don't think. Fair enough if that wasn't his intent. But you can't really do that can you? Ignore all the negatives and only recognise the positive. By the same token, modern day football is great, you can bring the entire family, won't even have to fear being racially abused. Ignore the shit atmosphere and high ticket prices and it's the best time to be a football fan. But I agree - standing - anything to improve atmosphere at top level games would be great. But seriously, fuck the 80's. Read my post above instead of guessing my intent. I'm not trivializing racism or hooliganism. Unfortunately it is still relevant today. Hooliganism not so much granted.

I was at the game where Steve Hunt played. A grim 2-0 defeat to Soviet Union. Bobby hadn't got to grips with International management at that stage, not that he really ever did, but this was a low point even for him. Steve Hunt and John Gregory for England ffs.

    Surprisingly good start by England.
  18. Not my point in the slightest. Racism at football and hooliganism still exists at the game in this day and age. It is as unacceptable then as it is now. That's why I put it in that context. The fact is , a winter game, as football is, is far more conducive to standing and since standing isn't allowed anymore then it isn't as enjoyable. Plus in this day and age the modern stadia aren't as good for atmosphere.
  19. You're black right? Did you ever go to a game in the 80's? From older people I know, it was nothing to miss. Aside from the hooliganism and occasional racism, it was a far better experience than today. Not sure when to pinpoint when it started to decline but it wouldn't be long after Sky came in.
