Not in my book they aren't. An icon is someone who excelled in their field over an extended period of time. So Shearer qualfies for that with ease. Nolan is just an average player who had one great day playing for NUFC.
-
Icon is a very complimentary term you know?
-
I will bet money that you only started supporting NUFC in the 90s. Anyone who puts Shearer on the same pedestal as KK is simply clueless and did not get to have the "experience" of supporting NUFC pre-1992.
-
We will have to disagree, I dont think their current squad is that special. Before yesterday's game our match with them this month was being described on here as one to be won. The result last night is a sticking plaster over their problems. Yes, their squad shouldnt be in a relegation battle but their support is so toxic towards Rafa that it could drag them into one.
-
Shearer is more icon than legend. A great player who scored lots of goals for us. KK on the other hand literally single handedly created the modern-day NUFC. Without KK there would have been no Shearer, no Bobby Robson, no 52K new stadium, no Rafa Benitez and therefore no Saudi takeover. KK made the club something that would appeal to super-rich buyers.
-
Bollocks. NUFC went down with a better squad in 2009 and 2016 and the toxicity off the pitch played a big part in that. Never underestimate the feel bad factor and its ability to send a club into a tailspin. All that needs to happen is EFC to go on another bad run, sack Rafa and then get a shoddy replacement for them to get locked into the bottom 7.
-
Have you been asleep for the last 6 or 7 weeks? Their club is tearing itself apart. Tonight's result just papers over the cracks.
-
Because his club have very much looked like they could get properly dragged into the relegation mire. The mire that we will be stuck in for a good while this season. Its not rocket science.
-
Their history is irrelevant. They are the most toxic club in the league with a mediocre squad. We more than anyone know what can happen when you've got that combination.
-
That is just because they seem to big a club to go down, but they aren't. If I could pick one surprise team to get dragged into the mire its them.
-
Disagree. Most fanbases have moved on from the Saudi thing already. Only the peasants down the road, Evertonians and the self-styled moral arbitrators of football, ie Liverpool fans on RAWK, are still harping on about it.
-
I like Rafa too. But he is now at a club where a huge amount of their fans loathe NUFC. A look at the many social media platforms confirms this. They fucking hate us and have done since the mid 1990s when they laughably tagged us a "Sky Team". They shouldnt be anywhere near a relegation battle this season but the toxicity of their fanbase could drag them into one.
-
Agree. I literally couldn't give a fuck about what happens to Benitez now. He's not only history, he is also a relegation rival due to the way their fans are treating him.
-
No idea why people are celebrating an Everton win. They absolutely detest NUFC and could be genuine relegation candidates this season.
-
First I've heard of the Barca thing. As I say though, NUFC were a Champions League side under SBR that were not far off being a title winning team. Turning down Man U was a mistake that he no doubt regrets. I've nothing against Shearer the player. But I just dont buy into his devotion as a NUFC fan. He's also an incredibly mediocre pundit. And dont get me started on his defence of The Cabbage. But the guy was an incredible player and, yes, one of our all-time greats.
-
When he wrecked his ankle in the pre-season of 1997 he instantly became a lesser player. This put him between a rock and a hard place. Also, we were still an ambitious club, looking to win trophies but Ruud Gullit nearly ruined his career. Then in comes SBR and turns us into a Champs League team. Why would he want to leave NUFC in that time? By the way, its common knowledge that SBR seriously considered selling him.
-
Comparing KK and AS in terms of NUFC legendary status is completely nuts. The two men are literally worlds apart.
-
Sorry, but you are very naive to believe he chose to shun trophies to come back home. Keegan convinced him that NUFC would be more successful than Man U going forward. No wonder he was so pissed off with KK for jumping ship. I would have been too.
-
He come because he thought NUFC would win more trophies than MUFC. The decision was completely devoid of sentiment. I can bet you any money that if he could go back in time, knowing what the future held by signing for us, then he would sign for Man Utd. Rightly so too, as time has shown that he made the wrong decision.
-
KK wouldn't do it for free mind as he is another who comes with a hefty pricetag. At least with Keegan though you get value for money.
-
Because he's a greedy bastard. Personally I'd have him nowhere near anything to do with the running of the club. Great player for us and that's it. I can think of at least 3 players ahead of Shearer who I idolised more though.
-
It was objectionable because a) It's a horrible, cheap and tacky brand whose logo looks awful, and b) because NUFC were not being paid a penny for it. If Ashley had paid for it in the proper manner then people would have tolerated it. Renaming the stadium with the SD name in it was a step too far though, and that was due to the tackiness of the brand.

No head in the sand here, I am well aware that we are in very serious trouble and look more likely to go down than stay up at the moment. The difference is I am not writing us off. We are in a unique position whereby we can outspend every team in January. If we are still no more than 6 points adrift on January 1st I give us every chance of staying up. I''m not interested in the stats of what has happened in seasons past.
-
You can discount the first 11 games though. The season started against Brentford.
