I don't necessarily think the problem is even entirely with De Jong; if we had a solid spine and 2 really competent banks of 4 that could defend, get bodies forward and support Mitrovic with De Jong behind then he'd have a role to play as I've no doubt he'd score goals. Sadly we have none of that and look unlikely to for a very long time, therefore we simply can't carry him as we'd be effectively playing with 10 men in every game. 8 if you count Anita and Colback as a partnership in midfield

You have to wonder if Rooney's natural physique counted against him in many ways, even if he had been a consummate professional athlete he was always going to be stocky and heavy and that does not lend itself to longevity for the type of player he was. Many factors involved for but it's certainly one of them.

I remember the amount of fans who said he can't play through the middle. It was so weird, knowing his technical capabilities Anyone who wanted him RW (like myself) was probably basing it on the fact that all of his best games for us came in that position. On the right there was nothing defenders could do with him. Through the middle he tended to be nullified far more easily. this is true like, he never seemed to do well on the middle. he was outrageous at times on the right. the kid he murdered that villa full back was hilarious I always put this down to Pardew having his team set up like a fussball board with rigid lines and no forward movement from midfield. He was too isolated the few times he played 10 for this reason and never had support. Drop him in Perez's spot now with Sissoko and Wijnaldum breaking etc and it would be a different story imo.

Didn't know he signed a 4 year £8.5m contract extension in the summer He'll walk away with about 30m if they sack him now, incredible stuff. Wonder if they could use the Caneiro stuff as breach of contract and bin him for nothing.
