In short, yes. He's probably not even seen the tackle in replay yet. What was Barton apologising for then? The ref's mistake? The tackle was unnecessary, and I can understand the ref giving a red from the position he was standing in, only seeing the back of the challenge. It was still not a red card challenge though from watching the replays, which is why I'm this annoyed with people saying it was when it quite frankly, wasn't.

Anyone thinking it was a two footed tackle on the man, needs to get their eyes checked. One foot goes first, gets some of the ball, and a small bit of Alonso. Second foot follows, since it's attached to Barton's body. The foot is not coming studs up, it's coming with the knee. Alonso gets trapped in between the first foot and the last foot with one of his feet, and falls. Seeing how the ref did not see it from a good angle, I can understand why he thinks it's two footed on the man. But from another angle, you see it's not exactly a tackle Barton should make. But not worthy of a red card, as it's neither foul play or violent conduct. It's just a semi-mistimed tackle, should be nothing more than a yellow. Thats what I thought, but as soon as Alonso came off in a stretcher that was the end of our appeal. Alonso fell pretty awkwardly. It was still not a red though, you could have a shoulder against shoulder situation where one player falls down awkwardly and get injured.

That would have been a goal had the keeper not been in the way. I don't see how you can blame Michael Owen for not scoring when it's not his fault that the opposition team have goalkeepers guarding the nets.

It will be devastating financially and for the stature of the club. For a player clean-out, it would be a positive.

I'd say you need to read it, watch the replay. It's not a red. It's a bad challenge, but it's not worthy a red. Any other player and it would've been a yellow, or nowt. He went in with two feet, which can be classed as either violent conduct or serious foul play. That's a red card according to the book I got when I qualified as a referee. You're right that some would have got away with it and the fact that it was Barton didn't help much, but according to the rule book the ruling was correct. He was on the ball first, and it was one-footed. The angle made it look worse than it was.
