We managed to sign 1 of our 2 major targets in Botman. We’ve also signed an England keeper and a LB who did a good job last year. Any signing has to be the right one, it’s a long road ahead. The club know what’s needed and I’m all for them not accepting poor alternatives or agreeing ridiculous Newcastle Tax fees. This season is really a bit of a free pass with rebuilding. The real time to worry is if can’t attract top targets in 2 or 3 years time. There’s a ceiling we need to smash through and it won’t be easy.

So we’d stick him on the right in place of Fraser and a better version of Almiron? Would be a very expensive option. I do agree it’ll not happen.

Assuming Wilson is fit and we get a goal scorer in for when he is injured, where do play Werner?

They’re having to throw millions at the golf as it’s new venture and in direct competition with the established tours. They can’t be seen to fail and they’ll continue to throw stupid money at it until it becomes an accepted entity. It shouldn’t affect us as let’s face it, they’ve the sovereign wealth behind them. I get the feeling we’ll make signings but we’ll only buy players that will improve us and at sensible prices. We can’t be seen panic buying forking out inflated fees and contracts. It’s going to take time. If LIV shows one thing, it should be that the funds are there to get a job done.

Is it wrong that I think the lasses should take pot shots as soon as they get 25 yards from goal; decent hit anywhere near the corner/ fairly high up and you’ll score a fair few? That was a fair hit but the keeper may as well not have been there. Not a criticism, just an observation.

It looks uninspired but if we can get him at a reasonable price he’s a big upgrade on what we have. I have a feeling he’s a little deceptive in what he brings to a side.

Should be mentioned that we gave away a really poor goal defensively and Dubs wasn’t great on the shot. I fancy Pope saves that.

As for Shelvey, looks fit and some cracking passes, give him 5 yards of space and he’ll be fine. Sure, he needs an upgrade but we’ve got more pressing needs. I hope we go full strength for 70 mins next game. We need to know what that looks like.

Good workout, certainly helpful in gauging who isn’t really up to it and what we need. Another striker and RW based on today’s showing. Fraser can do a job and look decent but he’s been poor in the 2 games I’ve seen. Anderson impressed today, looked better than Longstaff. Be good to see him get a start. Couple of astute signings and we’ll good to go.

If anyone at the club is reading, why could I benefit from a Magpie Mover card if I chose to live next door to Uncle Mick but because I live just over the border In Northumberland I have to pay around £100 more every season to get to the match? Have a word with Arriva and Northern Trains and get something sorted. My mates train takes longer than mine to get to Newcastle but he’s in Tyne & Wear so that’s ok. Random rant but it annoys me every year.
