Real Madrid are a different level of club so very difficult to judge but it is interesting how the relationship between him and the players turned sour so quickly. I can't even begin to imagine trying to handle all those ego's and attitudes but great managers can. All part of his learning I guess.

I am sure no one would deny what Alonso did at Leverkusen was truly remarkable. There can always be a small element of it just being a perfect coming together of every element (good manager, right combination of players), just at the right time (bit Leicester-ish) and I would like to see what Alonso does next to see of he is truly capable of brilliance everywhere, rather than not just a true moment of perfection at Leverkusen. Certainly, his first foray into management elsewhere wasn't good and maybe is suggestive of him not being able to make the step up.

The game fell at the wrong time, right at the end of a brutal string of fixtures.

Funnily I spoke with a colleague about this very subject this morning. I am prepared to accept his flaws because of how well he presents himself and represents our club. When I think of the awful human beings that have been in that position recently, and how insufferable so many other current managers are, I am proud that Eddie Howe is ours.

What's the chances people said exactly the same about Howe at Bournemouth when he and they were flying high. Grass is always greener and all that...
