Serious question. Who is more suited to commenting on Guthrie? Us or Liverpool supporters? Because the Liverpool supporters are gutted to see him go. From what I saw of him last year he'll be a very, very handy squad player. Fair enough if he cost upwards of 5m, but it's 2m for fucks sake. Hardly going to make a big loss if he turns out shit (which he wont). Don't be excited, but the thing is we need squad players, not every signing is going to be a superstar. Not every signing CAN be a superstar.

I can't believe some people aren't happy with this. 2m is nowt these days, and we've got a capable premier league player for it. He's young, plenty of scope for improvement, and to say he's only workmanlike is laughable. Reading the Liverpool forums, most of their supporters are absolutely livid with it as they thought he could've been on their bench (remembering theres 7 on it next year) next season and had a back-up role to play. Now, if he's good enough for back-up for Liverpool, he's certainly good enough as a squad player for us. Great bit of business.

We've got a promising young English player for a bargain £2m (these days it is a bargain, lets face it). Don't see what the problem is.

I was going to say something about that. Not just aiming this at James exclusively because he probably isn't the only thinking of doing it, but I'd be really unimpressed and pretty disgusted if any of our fans actually did that at a game. I don't like the idea of booing anything related to NUFC (I just can't see how it helps the players other than reinforcing how unhappy we may or may not be) though I can understand why people want to and do when we're playing awful. It's not so much that I care about Barton's feelings but more because how exactly would that help the team - in other words, what would be the point? I'm wondering where all of this reaction is coming from? We've known for ages he was up on the Dabo case charges, and regardless of whether he pleaded guilty or not, he was still in jail to start with. To be honest, like many others, that footage isn't as bad as I thought it would be to be honest. It was a needless, savage attack, but it could've been worse.

All you'd accumulate is high expectations. I understand what you are trying to say however know that with Mike Ashley's billions, we do not want to be another Chelsea. But then again, not spending much will not do much either. I want so much for us to be the next Chelsea. Its looming larger and larger that we will not get near Champ League in our lifetime. i want so much to have some silverware or get into the Champ League before the next 10 years but does not look like happening, more like end of many of our lifetimes optimistically. i dunno about you guys but i want us to be the next Chelsea. Okay, so this thread is being made in.... June. The transfer window doesn't open til July. It then closes at the end of August. By my reckoning that still gives us just over 2 months, and with Euro having finished now you'll start to see more action by everyone. How about we actually wait til the transfer window opens first eh?

If we brought Evans in, my guess would be as backup. Although from what I've heard, he does have a very bright future, and he was quite impressive at the Mackems last season.
