Fairly upbeat story in the Journal for a change. Apparently Spurs have turned baptista down so we have a chance http://www.journallive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2008/06/28/magpies-offered-beast-of-seville-61634-21165867/ Magpies offered ‘Beast of Seville’ Jun 28 2008 by Mark Douglas, The Journal NEWCASTLE United have been offered Real Madrid attacking midfielder Julio Baptista as they continue their efforts to make a breakthrough in the transfer market. The 26-year-old Brazilian has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu after losing his place last season, and Newcastle are among a clutch of English clubs who have been alerted to his availability. With Joey Barton’s future still far from certain the club are on the look out for midfield reinforcements, and Baptista certainly boasts a CV to match any of the players they realistically will be able to tempt to St James’s Park. United can expect plenty of competition if they do decide to take up their interest, with Baptista already offered to Tottenham – who turned down the chance to take him to White Hart Lane – and Blackburn, who are interested but would struggle to cover the cost of his personal terms. The player’s representatives are also looking for a new club in Italy, with Roma and Fiorentina among the interested parties in Serie A. Newcastle’s link to any deal comes in the form of technical director Jeff Vetere, who has maintained links with Real from his time working for the club as a scout. And while United’s manager is yet to sanction a move for the man once dubbed ‘the beast of Seville’, he is understood to be a credible target as they look to add quality to a perilously thin squad. When Keegan set out his criteria for new signings at the end of the season he pinpointed Premier League experience as one of the key requirements – and Baptista has that from the season he spent on loan at Arsenal. Baptista enjoyed mixed fortunes in North London, failing to earn himself a regular place in the Gunnners team and eventually returned to Madrid. But despite some teething troubles in England, he showed signs that he was beginning to adapt to the Premier League by the end of his short spell at Arsenal – and still managed to score ten goals in 35 games for the Gunners. United’s lack of confirmed activity in the transfer market masks plenty of work behind the scenes, and a breakthrough is expected in the weeks following the conclusion of Euro 2008. The club are short of numbers after the departure of Emre and David Rozenhal, and with substantial funds to spend Keegan will hope to make his first signing before the players return for pre-season training in the first week of July. As revealed in The Journal last month, Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is another of the names under consideration at St James’s Park – although Sir Alex Ferguson is yet to make any decision on whether the 20-year-old will be allowed to leave Old Trafford again on loan. Newcastle paid close attention to Evans’ progress while he was on loan at the Stadium of Light in the second half of the season, and a number of glowing reports were filed to United’s scouts. However, Keegan’s new signings will certainly not include Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who was alleged to be interesting United. The Scotland international has signed a new five-year contract at Ibrox, squashing speculation that Kevin Keegan wanted him to replace Shay Given. And another player linked in some quarters with United, Sweden international Johan Elmander, has joined Bolton on a three-year deal. As United look to add new signings to their squad before the season starts in August, they are now resigned to losing first-team coach Steve Round. He has been given permission to talk to Everton with a view to being appointed as David Moyes’ assistant and that move could be confirmed in the early part of next week – leaving Keegan to begin the search for another coach to supplement his backroom staff.

http://www.thespoiler.co.uk/index.php/2008/06/25/ten-players-you-dont-want-linked-to-your-club Underwhelming transfers Ten players you don’t want linked to your club June 25th, 2008 · 17 Comments The Spoiler considers the footballing talent you rather see warm someone else’s bench next season Much like when a hot girl comes for an interview at your place of work, the feeling of knowing a quality player could be joining your club is pretty uplifting. However, unless you support Manchester Utd, Chelsea or Arsenal, occasionally a player who provokes a combined feeling of fear, disappointment and mild anger will crop up on the rumour radar. Even Liverpool suffer a little from ropeytransferitis, with names like Stewart Downing and James Milner not exactly living up to last summer’s star signing Fernando Torres. With this in mind, we decided to compile a list of the ten names most likely to make you choke on your Corn Flakes when the back pages associate them with your side. Let’s get things started with a couple of Frenchmen… Djibril Cisse The French striker flopped during his spell at Liverpool but that doesn’t stop him believing that we all love him, judging by his determination to return to the Premier League. We don’t Djibril, we don’t. Lillian Thuram Even Lil realises that he’s not that popular after being dumped by Barcelona and failing with France. “I would like to continue to play but I don’t know if a club wants me,” he said last week. Celtic and Rangers have been linked but Scots can rest easy as he now appears to be PSG-bound. Justin Hoyte Perfect proof that playing with some really good players once or twice a season doesn’t make you a really good player. Maybe Martin O’Neill thinks he could do a Bentley and flourish away from the Emirates, but his loan spell at Sunderland suggested that simply won’t happen. Harry Kewell The Socceroo was one of the most exciting players in the Premier League…five years ago. After a few years rotting in hospital beds and in Liverpool’s reserve team he is damaged goods. Thankfully it’s looking like he will take WAG Sheree Murphy off to Italy. Stephen Carr Kevin Keegan is happy playing any old rubbish in defence, believing the strikers will score enough goals to negate the errors. If KK deems the Irishman unworthy, that ain’t a good sign. West Ham and Aston Villa fans have been among those squirming at the thought of him pulling on claret and blue. James Beattie He had one great season in 2003 that saw him score 23 goals, win some England caps and join Everton for £6 million. It was on Merseyside that it all fell apart, but now he has scored goals in the Championship, where anyone can beat anyone else, he’s worth £5 million all over again. Roy Keane is said to be tempted, and has already paid £4 million plus on three Championship players. Don’t do it, Roy! Nicky Shorey After looking incredibly ordinary as Reading sunk without a trace, Shorey has inherited the one-season wonder mantle previously held by players like Marlon Harewood and Darren Bent. So why is there always someone waiting to pay big money to give them another chance? Johan Elmander Recognise the name? Elmander was the guy who did a remarkable job of featuring in all three of Sweden’s Euro 2008 games while managing to do a grand total of nothing. We’re not even sure he touched the ball. So feel some sympathy for Fulham and Bolton fans, whose clubs may be willing to pay eight figures for him. Scott Carson He’s nowhere near as bad a goalkeeper as that mistake suggests, but he’s damaged goods and his confidence is shaken. Plus Rafa Benitez is sure to demand big money if the Peter Crouch saga is anything to go by. Aston Villa got to witness him first hand for 12 months before deciding he wasn’t worth buying, so why are there so many others in the queue? If Tottenham ever sign a new keeper, expect Paul Robinson to displace Carson in this list. Milan Baros The striker who flopped at Liverpool and Aston Villa has managed to make an entire career trading off his Euro 2004 topscorer success. He went to Portsmouth in January but scored a grand total of zero then went to the Euros with Czech Republic and failed to score. He’s now supposed to be the goal hero who keeps West Brom in the Premier League; Tony Mowbray would be wiser to stick with Kevin Phillips. For realistic summer targets we are shit scared of I would add Dawson to the list. Surprised theres not more Newcastle players / ex players in their top ten.

Dont know if this has been posted already Keegan’s brought back fun at UnitedMay 3 2008 by Mark Douglas, The Journal NEWCASTLE United assistant boss Chris Hughton has revealed the secret behind the Kevin Keegan-led renaissance that has electrified St James’s Park over the last two months – a change in emphasis on the training pitch aimed at getting his players to enjoy their work again. Hughton was brought into the United coaching staff on Keegan’s orders after Sam Allardyce’s deputy Nigel Pearson departed to take over at Southampton, and he has been credited with playing a key role in the defensive improvements that have been behind Newcastle’s run of seven unbeaten games. And the former Tottenham coach, who was speaking to promote the Show Racism the Red Card initiative yesterday, believes the changes on the training pitch since Keegan took over from Allardyce have been pivotal to their improved form. Keegan does not take a lead role on the training pitch, instead allowing coaches Steve Round and Hughton to do most of the sessions while the manager takes an overview and amends things where he believes they need to be changed. And that has proved a successful formula with the players, who have responded with better results and much-improved morale. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT “At some clubs you have a manager who does all of the training and it’s very difficult to do,” said Hughton. “When you watch Kevin he allows myself and Steve Round to take most of the training and he then has an overview and changes things that need changing. “Kevin has a way of working – he wants players to enjoy training and to get fulfillment from training. He wants them to have a spring in their step and a smile on their face – that’s what he wants and I think that is what he’s got now. “What I’ve seen from the time I’ve been here is that he has focused on that and from that you can go on to get results. Once you’ve cracked that it gives you the confidence and that is such an important thing – it helps you win football matches. “One thing I saw from the outside when Kevin first came in was that he had some terribly-difficult matches when he was settling in. The big change was the Birmingham game away from home – we should have gone on and won it but despite not winning we gained terrific confidence from that. “We changed the system to go to a three up front and it came off. Confidence is a big thing – you look at Sunderland and it wasn’t one of our best performances but we won the game. It was the same (when we drew) against West Ham. They are the type of results you get when you’re confident.”

Roy Keane on sky sports news didnt exactly pledge his future to Sunderland. said he has one year left and will see how it goes. Maybe has his eye on another job?

Nobby 94th - wtf
-
If it was last 10 years Hamilton would walk it

Suprised Dalglish didnt get more votes. Watching some of the games he was in charge for made me want to poke my eyes out. Barca game I know was great but watching the Keegan team be dismantled was so depressing.

What about the previous Keegan era. Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, Rob Lee all improved with us. Could happen again
-
The thing I like least about this is the seeding for the top clubs. If this does go ahead how long before it is suggested for cup games - more potential giant killer games for tv and less chance of the big four cocking it up.

Geremi looks like he'll be away a bit longer. Just scored a belting free kick against tunisia. 2-0
