In fairness, he got this one and Perch (which I suspect may have been down to Calderwood) wrong. Other than that, I can't remember a better manager we've had a in a while for identifying which positions need strengthening and then addressing them. Even signings that were a bit naff like Khiz and Pancrate were rightly short-term things that he didn't persue.

This is the reason why I always seem to play up front myself, actually.

I'd sooner see Smith upfront than in centre midfield, that way he'll do less damage to our play. Who knows, he might even get lucky. I agree that Ranger should be starting though. If he starts Smith up top, it's a bonkers decision unless Smith scores.

It's like the summer all over again. For that price, I'd love us to be in there. Say we shift Best off for ~£1m, net spend on the transfer is £2.5m. If that was our only transfer dealing of the window I'd be fairly pleased.

This 'appearances' thing doesn't make sense to me. I thought those sort of clauses were for 25, 50, 75, 100 games etc? He's made about 12(?) competitive appearances in a Newcastle shirt, why the fuck would we have to pay money that isn't a pittance then? If it's "fee per game" then I've no idea why he's made 89th minute appearances in the past, surely we'd have used someone cheaper. Ah well.

We might as well raffle his place on the subs bench off to the fans, tenner a ticket. At least we'll make some cash that way, it's obvious that first Hughton and now Pardew have absolutely no intention of giving him pitch time.
