http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/worldcup2010/article-1289329/WORLD-CUP-2010-Frank-Lampard-lead-fateful-picked-end-spot-jinx.html England's 5 penalty takers: Frank Lampard Steven Gerrard Wayne Rooney James Milner Gareth Barry ....doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence tbh. Neither do the rest (Terry, A Cole, Defoe, Johnson etc)

Capello should be a good enough manager to know how to stop Messi. Even Rehagel with his bloody bad team could stop Messi. Inter kept him quiet for 2 x 90 mins as well. Messi shouldn't be the problem. And if he isn't the problem anymore, there won't be any problem left. ... Apart from Higuain, Di Maria, Tevez, Aguero, Milito and the rest of the potential match-winners in their squad... But if THEY aren't a problem anymore, we're laughing. And Jonas. of course!!! Although Ashley Cole will have a field day against him, which would be bittersweet.

I know I've suggested Anthony Annan many times before, but he really has shown his quality at the World Cup. He is worth the hype. Exactly what we need too. Unfortunately if he keeps playing well, others clubs will want him and his value will skyrocket. We HAVE to try though.

It all counts, dammit!

Agger do, do, do At the back for Liverpool Agger do, do, do Cannot score past Timmy Krul

He's quite young, so he's not got a lot of mileage

Last months FourFourTwo had an interesting article on the German mentality. The title was "Q. Why will Germany do well at the World Cup Finals? A. Because they always do". It says that it doesn't really matter how much ability German players have, but they've got an unshakable winning mentality thats been drilled into them all their lives. Thats why they overachieve time and time again - they've been brought up as Turniermannschaft (a tournament team). The U21 and U17 winning sides of late have epitomised this. Still think England will win though
-
So Holland-Cameroon (which is essentially pointless) is on BBC1, whilst the winner-take-all Denmark-Japan is on BBC3. Strange.

Have you emailed that to them? That offside call was shocking, i thought. Look clearly on to me. But is this the first time that both finalists from 4 years ago have gone out in the group stage?

What An Ending
-
That match at Wimbledon finished 70-68 in the final set, Isner won
-
Fucking hell. They'll be livid at that offside like. First touch as well.......you really cant write this stuff
-
what an ending!!! i love the world cup
-
Disgraceful the way he was rolling around there
-
God, are any decent teams actually going through? Not that Italy have played well at all......
-
Is it Germany-England rather than England-Germany? If so, we'll be in the red shirts I think.
-
Argentina 2002? 8 years ago like. Most of this bunch weren't playing for England then, I should've been more specific.
-
Dead excited for this now. Been watching highlights of the Euro 96 match Aren't Germany the only big nation we've beaten in recent years?
-
Nab 2nd place to face Holland in the second round. Then Paraguay vs Denmark
-
Those are quality I wonder if this tournament will be a turning point for football over there. America doing well will do more than Beckham ever did. Isn't the World Cup great?

"Big teams" at the WC is bull. It's a short tourney once every four years, and if the "lesser known" teams outpreform the "big" teams and get a better playoff route, it's because they've (in most cases) earnt it. Which in my eyes makes them the "bigger" teams at this particular WC tournament. Obviously not as fun to watch as "major" nations, but they're the ones that's done the best so far, so give them some credit, they've earnt their "easy" route. I see what you're saying, but the major nations have such a reputation because they are the best in the world and are generally more difficult to beat. South Africa beat France yesterday, but in theory I know France are more capable of beating England. Maybe Ghana/Uruguay will end up being more difficult than Argentina/Germany, but I know who I'd rather face.

It was sadly predictable that USA would finally score, fucking go for the second goal man!!!! So now we might get Uruguay vs Skorea, USA vs Ghana and Paraguay vs Denmark in the 2nd round, whilst England play Germany, Spain play Portugal and Holland play Italy. Madness! And I don't get this "well we have to beat the big teams sometime"......I'd rather get to the semis by beating rubbish (like 1990) than go out in the 2nd round against a big team (1998). England and Germany will both feel very confident about beating the other this time because both teams are their weakest in years. I can't wait though. Fate will give us England vs Maradona's Argentina in the QF, although I'm at a wedding that day But as for todays match, the atmosphere sounded incredible and by playing Milner and Defoe, Capello proved once again that he is one of the best around. He didn't cave in with Gerrard off Rooney, he picked what he felt was right and the performance was very good. But obviously they'll live to regret not getting a second goal.
