  1. Should United offload some of their stars then they could move for other targets. With the likes of Mathieu Debuchy of Lille linked with Real Madrid, Pardew said: “I want the fans to know that myself, Lee (Charnley) and Derek (Llambias) are monitoring all the transfers.

“We know the players we’re looking out for, and if they move, that might trigger us.

“If they don’t, we may hold off until such time we think the deal might be better.”

What does that actually mean? If they move, how can we be triggered?

He's not the most eloquent English speaker. This is in relation to his comment about our targets being secure at their clubs. If that changes, we'll make our moves.

Fair enough, but apart from agreeing fees how else can they change? Formal transfer requests?

That's one option. Alternatively the players could pass little written notes to their agents.

  2. Our transfer strategy appears to be totally dependent on either other clubs massively overpaying for one of our players, or selling excellent players to us for peanuts.

Granted it's actually worked so far, but I have serious doubts as to it's sustainability long term....

It's how Spurs do business somewhat. Always seem to sell for extortionate amounts, and buy for practically fuck all.

  3. “The most important thing is we don’t lose one of our key players. I’m on guard at that. The club’s on guard, and we’ve got to be careful.”

He makes it sound like someone is going to break in, bundle a player into a van and drive him off to a new club.

You don't have to be careful, you just have to turn them all down!

Depends how much is offered, would you turn down 20 million for Cabaye?

    On deadline day, yes.

    Its good money.

Not a chance for 20m. Not when complete knackers like Downing are going for 18m.

  5. Problem is that I think he needs to play every week. He needs to be the main man, and assuming we're going 4-4-2 I don't think either of Ba or Cisse deserve to be rotated. I don't think they'd like it either.

As things stand I think we'll try again for Carroll right at the death in an attempt to get Liverpool to give in and bite the bullet. We're miles apart in terms of valuation though, so it seems doomed to fail.

Thing is I think Carroll with either of the two of them would be a better partnership than Ba and Cisse are.

And to hell with the not liking being rotated. Play well and force the manager to keep picking you. Competition is a good thing, frankly I'd be concerned about the mental strength of any player who took a huff because they had competition brought in for their place.

In principle I totally agree, but we've already seen that Pardew seems willing to pander to Ba with this whole 'he wants to play through the middle and he will' 4-4-2 thing.

Part of me can't believe that's the only reason he's playing 4-4-2.

Do you really think a manager would play what he believes is a weaker system in order to keep one player happy? I know it seems that way, it really does, but it's mental surely?

He's playing the percentages with 442. Two deadly finishers like our boys up front in the penalty area is bound to get us goals. That's the way he sees it imo.

  6. AEL Limassol (my local club in Cyprus) is away to Anderlecht in tonight's CL qualifier. Leading 2-1 from the first leg, and only need to draw. Never in a million years would I have imagined they would be anywhere near European football never mind the CL group stages.

Should they get through, all hell will break loose tonight.

  7. Sky Sports understands Bolton are one of five clubs chasing Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing.

Thought he was one of their better prospects?  Would it not be worth trying to develop this lad instead of spending money on guys like Allen?

Have to admit I thought he was younger than 23, mind.

eh? he's a train wreck of a footballer

  8. Pretty sure the manager, chief scout and owners aren't sat around twiddling their thumbs while NO readers contemplate suicide this week. I find it impossible to believe that Ashley still doesn't realize the benefit of a strong functioning squad. Most transfers really are very complicated, and we cannot be certain of what has been going on behind the scenes.

We all want a competitive squad, we all want to see NUFC win many more matches than we lose. That includes the manager and the owners. I do believe they are on a quest to achieve the best possible finish this season, using last season's relative success as a springboard.

Oldtype hit the nail on the head with his post. Not sure if it was in thread or not, but it sums up my view perfectly.

  9. Simpson's problem imo is very similar to Obertan's. All the athletic ability in the world, and nee football brain to go with it. Simpson is very reactive, when he should be proactive - reading the game etc..

  10.

The minimum a fan can expect is commitment and desire from a player. If they don't demonstrate that, fans are entitled to get on their back.

How do you measure commitment and desire?

Playing to the whistle instead of whining to the ref while play goes on (and your team is disadvantaged) to save face is a good start

This isn't one of the 'Jose Enrique body language speculation' moments.

He also seems to let his defensive partners to cover up for his error rather than making the effort to make amends.

I've actually noticed him do the opposite, to the detriment of the team. Too often he's out of position "covering" the CB's, completely unaware that he's lost the wide player he's meant to be marking.

  11. Posted it in the transfer thread but news breaking that Johnson has signed...

    :tumbleweed:

    :yao:

He's just texted Steve Howey on TotalSport during the show... Should be announce later... Good signing for them... Wonder what wages they are paying though...

I believe you dude. Just seems to be a bit of a meh moment for most on here.

Very good signing by them indeed.

  12. Mancini playing up Liverpool's title chances :pilko:

I read that as well. No clue why he would exaggerate that way. They are not that much better than last year, and their manager is a relative unknown quantity. Not sure what orifice he's talking out of tbh.
