My idea from earlier in this thread would have 8 games less and no team in 3rd place would qualify. The new idea is better than 3 team groups (it's basically a beefed up version of the 24 team Euros) but I really prefer the symmetry of 2 teams from every 4 team group qualifying.

The refs have just been super lenient all tournament tbh, yesterday's evening semi aside. One red card all tournament, England with zero yellows. It's mental tbh, surprised we haven't seen teams completely take the piss with it.

Don't have much sympathy for Tite but his and Luis Enrique's departures illustrate the razor thin margins in international tournament football. Clearly Spain and Brazil drawing against Morocco and Croatia respectively wasn't good enough for those nations but either could have won their shootout and gone on to win the whole thing, particularly Brazil. It's brutal and I think you'd lower the stakes in these knockout games immeasurably if the World Cup was switched to every 2 years.
