  10. Alan Irvine has been sacked as manager of Preston North End after a disappointing recent run of results. Deepdale chairman Derek Shaw felt he had to act after seeing the Lilywhites slide down the Championship with just seven points gained from their last 10 games. The 1-0 defeat by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Monday was the final straw for Irvine, who had been at the helm for just over two years. Irvine, who was appointed from his post as assistant to former North End boss David Moyes at Everton, leaves the club eight points away from the relegation places, but the same margin adrift of the play-off places. The Scot helped Preston beat the drop in his first season in charge before guiding them to last season's play-off semi-finals, where they were beaten by the Blades. Decision Shaw told the club's official website: "The decision was not taken lightly. "Alan did an extremely good job in keeping us in the Championship and took us to the play-offs last season, however, after a good start to the 2009/10 campaign we have only picked up seven points from a possible 30 since our last away victory against Sheffield Wednesday on 20th October. "In that period we have only scored six goals and that sort of record is not something we could allow to continue without addressing it. "I would like to place on record the club's sincere thanks to Alan for his efforts in his time here." It has since been confirmed that assistant manager Robert Kelly will take charge of first-team affairs for Saturday's FA Cup tie against Colchester United. Shaw added: "After discussions with Robert Kelly, he has agreed to take charge of training from tomorrow (Wednesday) and will be in charge until any further announcement is made. "He will be selecting the side for Saturday's game against Colchester United."

  12. Burnley have agreed to pay Newcastle United for Canadian defender David Edgar, although a tribunal will set Richard Eckersley's fee. The Clarets will pay Newcastle an initial £300,000 for the 22-year-old, with a further six-figure payment payable based on appearances. Newcastle have also requested a sell-on clause meaning they will profit further should Burnley decide to sell the defender in the future. Out-of-contract Edgar joined the Clarets on a four-year deal last summer, but is yet to make his Premier League debut for Owen Coyle's side
  13. CRAIG BELLAMY and Shay Given are considering quitting Manchester City. New manager Roberto Mancini arrived at the club yesterday and immediately walked into tribal warfare. The ex-Inter Milan boss is used to being the big chief - but key players Bellamy and Given are still squawking over the way Mark Hughes was axed on Saturday. The pair have proved to be Hughes' best signings in his 18 months at Eastlands. Bellamy is particularly loyal to Sparky, having played under him at Blackburn and with Wales. GIVEN ... feels let downKeeper Given made the tough choice to leave Newcastle because of Hughes and the way the Welshman sold the ambitions of the club to him. Both feel let down by chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive officer Garry Cook. The pair were particularly emotional after Saturday's 4-3 victory over Sunderland at Eastlands which proved to be Hughes' last game. They led a six-player delegation to complain to Cook about the sacking. And they have told close friends they are now considering their futures. It will be a massive blow to Mancini if the pair decide to leave. Both arrived in January - Given for £8million and Bellamy for £14m. Many other players were unimpressed with their first day's training under Mancini and new assistant Brian Kidd. Mancini had given a short address to the players saying how much he was looking forward to working with them. Cook also told the players there had been no negotiations with Mancini until last Thursday. A number of players left shaking their heads as it was clear there was earlier contact. Yesterday Mancini admitted he met Khaldoon and Sheikh Mansour in London two weeks ago. A source close to the players said: "Some felt they were being treated like idiots and were not swallowing that."
